Anyone noticing an unusually poor November egg production?

GOOD idea!

Why didn't I think of that?

I'm not sure how this happened, but it's creepy. I have 32 girls, I think 30 are laying. I got exactly 650 unbroken eggs in October, and exactly 650 unbroken eggs in November. You don't get much more clockwork than that.

No extra light. And I'm up north where we're getting sun from 630 AM to 415 PM.

They get BOSS twice daily, plenty of kitchen scraps and 20% protein ration pellets.

I'm considering myself very lucky. Hope everyone else on this thread gets some good luck soon, too.

I went from 75% productivity in November 09 to 13% productivity November 10... but I also noticed a decline in October and it isn't looking any better for December. I got 4 eggs out of 32 hens both Dec 1 and 2. Of those 1 -2 were thin shelled and rough. They have plenty of free choice oyster shell too, along with layer, and their daily treats.

2 weeks of light therapy and the past week I've averaged 8/14. got 10 today, but one of hens flew off the top roost as the eldest DD was picking out the last egg. DD dropped 5 on the coop floor *splat*.

I have the time set to get them 14 hours of light per day. Worked for me.

My 6 E.E. girls have held steady and provide 4-5 eggs a day, of course they are only 9 months old.

They get light from 1 am til 5 pm (16 hrs). They are allowed out to free-range AFTER I get my eggs! I am not hunting for hidden eggs - Easter is fun, looking for eggs is not! I think they know they get to go forage after they lay, because I had 5 eggs at 9 AM today!

My hens have layer crumble mixed with oyster shell in a feeder and water, both in the house and outside. I do sprinkle Cayenne pepper on the food too - something I read about and I think it did help production increase from 2-3 to 4-5. The eggs are nicely shelled with no bumps or deposits, so the mix of oyster shell and food must be right.

I have had people trying to buy eggs from me that have their own chickens, so I think quite a few are having a slow time.

17 hens and we have not been getting more then 1 egg per week since September... Today we got 3 really big ones tho..
Are hens are 2 and 3 years I belive.. We think they just finished multing but last year it took a month.
We got this big heat wave for about a week and got no eggs then we got eggs for a week after that and then 3 months we are finally getting eggs.. All summer tho our egg production has been wacky always changing other then our Easter egger she laid all summer..

And we have had a light outside there coop in there run area and one inside so our chickens get 16 hours of light everyday...

No no no! Go over to the hobbies section of BYC and find the egg decorating thread, and decorate them!

It's addictive! Almost as much as chickens.

Good Idea! thanks for suggesting it!
