Your post makes the most sense, along with the age of the flock. I have 5 hens that are 19 months old, they barley slowed down last fall/winter. 3 are EE's and 2 are RIR. My EE's have not laid in over 3 weeks, the RIR are giving me 2 eggs a week!!! Good thing I adore my chickens or they would be stew.
I will try to increase their protein. Not sure if I want to try the cat kibble, as the crap they put in it can't be good. I may try the solar lights another poster mentioned, if I can find them cheap. My CSA has also been out of eggs and we usually eat 4 a day. Oh well, say la vie.
