I had a sag in egg production in October (no eggs for a week). I read some old postings about adding cayenne or crushed red pepper to their food. So I started with crushed red pepper I had left over from pizza orders then switched to ground cayenne (is it the same stuff? I am thinking so) at any rate, within a week my egg production came right back up and I am now getting average 3 eggs/ day from 4 chickens (I don't know their breeds--two are red and two are red/with black--I bought them as chicks at Atwoods-- -- all the eggs are extra large brown)We are in northern Oklahoma. No light therapy.

I had a severe drop in egg production after acquiring a new dog. I just thought the chickens would adapt since he wasn't bothering them, but he did like to run and sometimes ran right through the flock to scatter it. I went from a dozen eggs a day to just one or two. Then I discovered the dog was eating the eggs! Ultimately, the dog tried to eat a chicken, so no more dog. Now we're back up to eight a day and hopefully the others will come around. I have been giving them extra treats in apology for bringing a monster in their midst, but they all haven't forgiven me yet.

P.S. The dog is happily adjusting to a new home without chickens.

We had a serious reduction during October due to shorter daylight and moulting.

They are now in winter quarters and have 12-14 hours artificail light. There are many June hatched pullets that I would expect to be laying that seem to be taking their time getting started. I am seeing an increase since they have been cooped.

My DH is calling them freeloaders and showing them the pot.

Mine are starting to do just like they did last year. We get our first cool snap
and they start laying better. My Black Marans just started laying Saturday
and my FBCM's started last Tuesday. Just waiting on the Cuckoos to start now.

I keep waiting for my egg production to fall off. I have 5 gals who give me 16 or so eggs a week.

The two hens I had laying quit...the rest are April hatch and still not laying. Added two more RIR's from another flock that are laying great, but they may up and quit too! I've checked the birds over fearing some unseen illness, but all is well. Maybe theres some quirky moon alignment this month or something...LOL
