Anyone thinking of creating a Chicken Guillotine

We sure are trying to make processing a chicken difficult here now aren't we.

What used to be a pretty simple process of stick, slice, and bleed is now taking on new machinery, velcro, and second mortgages.

Are we still talking about chickens here, or did we move on to elk and bear and I didn't notice?

You know what, call me a wimp and I won't disagree with you

but while the knife method sounds easy and sensible I have this deep fear of, again, missing and cutting myself. (since it seems to me I'd have to be holding the head, to stretch the neck out and hold it still against the knife). I am not saying this is necessarily a totally reality-based fear but I have gotten awful attached to having 10 fingers and I'm inclined to err on the side of things that help it stay that way.

So for people like me, with reluctance about the knife and less than 100% accuracy with a hatchet, there may *be* some value to more automated-type systems.

Ask me in a couple years and I am sure I will have this all sorted out for myself but you know everyone has a learning curve

I borrowed some pruning shears from the neighbors a few weeks ago that I thought would work great for this, but haven't tried it on a bird. They were anvil type pruners with a razor sharp blade that closed on an anvil. I was cutting 1" mesquite branches, one handed, with ease. The brand was Fiskars, but this picture is representative of the style. You could put a bird in a cone, stretch the neck out with one hand and shear with the other...

Mac, excellent! Quick, easy, relatively painless and efficient. And I'm not being a smarty-pants. Now I know how I'll do mine when the time comes. ( I still think a guillotine sounds cool)

I just learned recently that we have men who will handle all that -- for a portion.

My hens I just can't ever envision on our dinner plates. We are also raising rabbits specifically for a household meat/pelt supply. And the family does want chicken and cornish hens.

So, I'll call in "the guys" who do that stuff.

And I'll go shopping or something until it's done.

I've thought of a Chicken Guillotine. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Patandchickens, I close my eyes when I make the cut with my knife. I hold them upside for a few minutes before hand so they're pretty quiet when I lay them down. I make sure my knife's sharp and it does a good job.

BethinIrving, what kind of rabbits do you have? I'm getting Silver Fox on Monday.

I found that my best way to kill a chicken is hang it on the fence and take a sharpe filet knife and pull the rooster head stretching it neck out and make one motion through it neck and it head falls off. I have no strengh in my shoulders at all they are tore up so bad I can't have any surgery to repair them but all I have to do is guide the knife through the neck.
