Anyone with ideas about my 'heartburn'

A friend of mine had these same symptoms, took tons of antacids and had all the tests you can think of to find out why he still continued to have heartburn. He even had had the surgery to correct his reflux. FINALLY a doctor found that he had a hiatal hernia and a small portion of his stomach was protruding through the hiatal hernia. He went years like this. They did surgery, closed the hernia and he is a new man. Just a thought...good luck and I hope you find out the problem. I have reflux and it's a........pain?

My mom had the same problem for several years. The pain was so severe upon occasion that she had several hospitalizations. Eventually self-diagnosed herself with a hiatal hernia. The doctors agreed, treated her accordingly and symptoms gradually subsided. Try another doctor, and good luck resolving this problem.

I just went through my hernia repair, The acid isnt as bad as it was but my understanding is that it takes time. My doctors statement "reduce your stress!", I wish he'd tell me how to do that though lol. Good luck I hope it gets better for you. The next move for me is to get my gallbladder out.

Also try raising the feet of just the head of your bed. It is also supposed to help. It does sound like a hiatal hernia. I hope you find relief soon.

I just wanted to add my boyfriend gets terrible heartburn sometimes and if it's really bad he will take some baking soda and water. He says it works much better than Tums or Malox. I hope you feel better soon!

Another BYC-er suggested deglycyrrhizinated licorice. soooothing!

baking soda/water for fast relief. i also drink club soda - it seems to help .

Again, thanks for all the replies. I do drink soda, I will stop. I have been on protonix like I said before for 2 years because I would be nausious all the time and feel like I needed to throw-up. The meds helped with the nausea. How do they check for a hiadal hernia? I just had the endoscopy, wouldn't he had been able to see it?

Evidently not. My friend had several endoscopies and scans done with dye and they missed it everytime. It wasn't until this particular surgeon was present during the last endoscopy and practically turned him upside down and looked specifically for this problem did they find it. It was a miracle. Thank goodness for the persistence on the surgeons part.​
