I started getting gray hairs in my 20's. Panicked of course and started pulling them out one by one. When I realized I was pulling out so many, bald spots were showing, I stopped.
The gray hairs coming in were pure white not yellowy, decided I liked them. I'm 70 and have snowy white hair, some stubborn(?) hair at nape of neck is still dark (not my doing).
When I was younger my dark hair was straight and fine textured that I didn't have to "iron it" like other girls were doing. It just was stick straight and couldn't even hold a perm.
Once the gray started taking over, I got wavy and sometimes curly hair coming in. What a nice surprise.
