Appraisal of ring found by hens PIC PG 6 Saga Continues.....

That is just fantastic! I know I keep saying that, but how neat and what a find!

My sixteen year-old says you need to take a metal detector out to your barn now. He is very determined that I tell you that.

The house I live in was built in the 70's but there was an old homeplace here before that. I am VERY tempted to go get a metal detector and fiddle around with it. I know that the pastures around my place were old farm fields years ago and that shar croppers farmed them. I also know that a neighbors place was once owned by a bootlegger years back. There are folks around who grew up in this community that I have spoken with and learned little bits and pieces. It is all very interesting.
The ring is something I will always treasure and it makes a cool story to tell my grandkids one day, lol

You can tell him that I plan to do just that as I have a very strong suspicion that this piece may have been part of a wedding set at one time and I can't help but wonder if perhaps the other half is still out there somewhere.

The problem with metal detectors on old farmsteads is that you will find a LOT of scrap metal before you get to anything of value. Gotta be patient and willing to sort through a lot!

Congrats on the ring. It's lovely!

Are the diamonds old mine cuts? The cut of the stone will give you some idea of the age of the ring.

Northwest Georgia was the sight of some really horrendous battles in the civil war. Anyone that had anything of value was either burying it, hiding it or running with it. And it was not easy to run with a lot of coin, the family silver and the good china.

Sherman's army went through Georgia looting, burning and raping until they reached the sea.

You definately need to work the property with a metal detector.

Rufus

P. S. Keep your mouth shut about anything you find. You know how governments like to glom onto anything of value.

This ring isn't that old I am certain. It's not got mine cut stones in it. I worked years back as a diamond consultant at Diamonds Forever at Arbor Place Mall so would have picked up on the cut immediately if that were the cas. Also, the back of the ring behind the diamonds is not closed as it most likely would have been if it were pre civil war era. But, It's still very nice

Will do! You might even find more than just the other half of the ring.
