Appraisal of ring found by hens PIC PG 6 Saga Continues.....

Wow - very pretty and great find!!!! My house is over 130 years old and I can only hope that my girls find something nice for me!!! Enjoy it!!!!

That is so neat your chickens found that for you.. I have had a sort of similuar thing happen.. Hope this isnt thread stealing, telling my little tale about my experiance..

I had a yard sale about 7 1/2 years ago. And after it was all over. I was walking in our drive way. And I found a ring. No one ever listed it as missing. No one claimed it.. Finally in 2008 we took it to a jewlry store to see if it was real or not. I had a feeling it might be diamonds. Because the stones were set to where the back was left open. We thought it was silver or white gold. Come to find out. They are diamonds. And the ring is made of platnium.. And it was made in the 30s or 40s. So it is old. Slightly damaged, from getting ran over. I didnt have money to get it appraised. But they told me not to do any thing with it. Like dont fix it until it is appraised. I was thinking about using the stones for a necklace. They said, No dont do that. So I am thinking it may be worth a bit. Hope so. But still dont have any money to appraise it though..

Edited: My spelling is awful..

Id say your chickens are paid up on the rent for quite a while. Nice ring too, what awesome luck.

I'd be willing to bet it was the bootlegger's.

My great grandfather was a bootlegger and he always had a wad of cash.

No reason why he wouldn't have spent it on his wife/girlfriend, whatever. A typical farmer/sharecropper wouldn't have had the money to "waste" on something as frivolous as diamonds. A bootlegger would have been more showy and put his money into more valuable smaller items like jewels or guns. Easy to carry, easy to get rid of, and they always hold their value.

Great story, great find!

Not that you shouldn't metal detector the barn. But it's also possible that someone lost the ring when mixing the feed at the feed store or at one of the processors or farmers from further down the line.

I doubt it was buried, if it was the people that were stashing it didn't do a very good job with the hole.

They told me a formal written appraisal started at around $49 and went up according to value. I will have one done eventually but just not now. The economy is putting a damper on all my unnessesary spending

May be a good investment. DW's grandpa has found a lot of things around his place where an old barn used to stand. Every now and then the ground wears down in a spot and something else turns up. Nothing as fancy as a diamond ring but you never know.
