April 2017 chicks, who will lay first contest...

Pics
So I am going out of town for 4 days. So that is probably a guarantee that my girls will start laying, right? :th

But we shall see. Freeloaders and nesting box poopers continue for now. 3 days moving Kentucky out of her fav nesting box and blocking it off, just moved her to another box to poop in. :hmm

Also congrats Gary. Who's girls led him to a victory. :celebrate

Here's a decent pic of got of my freeloading Goldie

Has anyone won yet? I meant to enter last month but forgot and I just now found the thread again, I ahem to hens hatched sometime in April not sure on the exact day. A White Leghorn and a Rhode Island Red. I've gotten 1 egg from my RIR everyday for the past week and a half but still no eggs from the leghorn, she is squatting though.

Try Ebay, I just took a look and saw many with hens. (But some old tableware can contain lead. I think it was outlawed in the 1970's.)
Flea malls are another option....I got a chicken cookie cutter at a flea mall...it says 3 French hens in it, so it's part of the 12 days song.View attachment 1135535

Only 1/6 for me today.....
These are adorable!!!!
Must. Find.

Uh oh... I may have 3/3 girls laying now. My 2/3 have been consistently laying every day, the last 3 days, while I'm at work. This morning is the uh oh part. My third girl has shown no signs. But, I woke up to an egg under the roost this morning. The other two have been doing a great job of laying in the same spot and building a nest with the straw. The one I found this morning also had a very soft and slightly misshapen shell. One end of it was even softer and bubbly looking. I've been giving free choice oyster shell in a dish for a few weeks since before they were laying. The first dish they kept kicking over. Then I changed to one of those corner mounting metal dishes. Is it possible she doesn't know better and I need to get layer feed? I have been using all flock.

At long last one of our seven has gotten off the pot. The shiny egg is a fake. We think Annie or Lucy our RIRs, are the likely non-slacker. All seven hatched on or about 4/24. The Easter Egger is close. The white plymouth rocks, BO and the Brahma, could still be a while. 20170913_164124.jpg 20170913_181218_001.jpg

Don't worry about an occasional soft shell, especially at first. Also soft eggs often come out in locations other than the nest. It is probably fine.
I have been using an all flock feed for over a year with no egg issues. They will take oyster shell as they need it.
