April 2020 Hatch-A-Long! All are welcome!

Pics
I know several hatcheries and breeders who charge for their hatching eggs half of what their chicks cost. If they're chicks are $10 a piece then that would be $60 for a dozen of their hatching eggs. Some sellers prices seem arbitrary. Other are very well prices for their breeding program and quality. You'll need to spend a few hours online looking at bird pictures or calling breeder to sort out who is who.

Have you guys heard that the farm stores are selling out of chicks exceptionally fast? People are posting in some Facebook local homesteading or supply chain groups I'm in about it. Like they can't find chicks anywhere! It sounded like stores are selling out the same day chicks arrive.

Typically our local farm stores sell out of popular breeds by the end of the weekend but there are still plenty of bird to choose from. How are your stores looking? If you've been recently that is.

Ours had them discounted and they sell super fast. They don't last where I am because we are in the country and a lot use them for meat and eggs.

Well the 35% off is just too good to pass up so I'm thinking of getting some bielefelder eggs and using them as breeders for a meat bird flock. 🤔
I want Bielefelders so bad! They're my only real wish list chickens. My husband wants them bc they autosex and are dual purpose. He's even named the rooster we don't have yet (his name will be Bob) 🤔:lau

I want them, too! For the same reasons as your husband lol. I know dual purpose birds dont convert feed as efficiently as meat birds, but I want to try them as meat birds. I like that the girls lay well enough that I can expect them to contribute some eggs over the winter months when we're done with meat birds.

I think I'm going a different route this year, though. Sigh. Next year bielefelders will be happening, though!

I almost got a trio of 2 week old Bielefelders from a local farm with lines from Omega Hills and Greenfire, but they sold an hour before I contacted the farm. It made me so mad. The folks were nice about it though and told me they have an upcoming hatch in a month soooooo they shall be mine at last:yesss:! I already told my husband who then pointed out we just bought 9 babies and are trying to hatch 38 more so why do we need more. My reply chicken math. Half of the 9 babies are going to my in-laws and the same with the 38 in the incubator. I'll keep 4 of the 9 and maybe 1-5 from the incubator the rest my friends who are also starting their flock asked for. So adding 3 Bielefelders isn't going to make our flock too big

I haven't been recently but I've seen increased activity of people in our local facebook group asking for chicks and chickens.

I'm hoping those on my waiting list will still be getting chicks with me because I have loooots of chicks coming, lol. One incubator about to hatch in a few days and then the Sebastopol Geese are due to hatch shortly after. I already have eggs arranged to put in them once this hatch is done.

Day 4 for these duck eggs. All 7 have heartbeats! :love
