April 2020 Hatch-A-Long! All are welcome!

Yes getting black birds then breeding them to lavender to get splits was what I was getting at, and exactly for the feather problem reasons. And since lavender breeds true, I probably won't get black splits from lavender hatching eggs since breeders probably aren't using their splits to sell split birds.

My understanding is if you breed black split to lavender to a lavender bird you get 50% black birds (carrying lav gene) and 50% lavenders, and I think doing that every once in a while is enough to alleviate feather problems but maybe it's not that simple.

All of this makes tons of sense! I’m learning lots about Lavender from this thread haha. Ok so - I have some Easter Eggers that are black and their dad was a Lavender Ameraucana...that makes them black split to lavender right? What are the color outcomes if I potentially bred them?

I'll join!

One of my chickens just went broody. She is just under a year old. Her name is Skye Bloo and she's a blue silkie.

This is Skye's second time going broody. The first time she went broody I put some balls under her to test her but the balls were two big and she wasn't fooled. She went out of broody mode but now she's back into it. Not sure if she'll stick with it, but I'll give her a chance.

She's been sitting on one of her own eggs since yesterday morning, but I put two more under her this morning. I'm hoping to get one more egg to put under her within the next few hours. All the eggs will be silkie eggs.

This will be my third hatch. I did my first two in a incubator earlier this year (in fact, I only just pulled the chicks out of the incubator from hatch two an hour ago). So I'm sort of new to hatching, but the claws of hatching fever are clutching me tight and I'm caught, though I'm not fighting back too hard :lau

Can't wait for egg talk and chick pictures!

Do you know what their mom was? If their dad is lavender Ameraucana then they would be split to lavender in theory. If it were me I would experiment to find out by breeding two splits together and seeing if any lavender babies come out!

The chart CluckNDoodle posted is super helpful!

Welcome! 🥳🥳 I'm working on my second batch of hatches ever - two incubator clutches and a broody hen on a small clutch. There are more experienced hatchers in the thread as well! Happy hatching! Keep us updated on your babies ❤

Their mom was a Flowery EE (Swedish Flower Hen x Ameraucana) crossed with a Marans.
I was only going to keep the pullets but maybe I’ll grow a Cockerel out too if I have room haha.
