April 2020 Hatch-A-Long! All are welcome!

Well, my last 2 ducklings are out as of last night, of course they were late and needed help because they ain’t right. 🙄 wound up with another blue and a bright yellow downed duckling (huh, supposed to be all blue but hey). Had to help both of them out, they started to zip and then just stopped and looked dead. 🤦‍♀️ Got them cleaned up, dried off, and gave them electrolytes, niacin, and some honey for some glucose in case they were hypoglycaemic. They’ve perked up a fair bit, but the one is still extremely uncoordinated and falls over backwards, has a head tilt. I’m guessing there’s a vitamin issue here so that’ll be the next thing I need to go pick up and pour into this poor little thing. Maybe I shouldn’t have helped them out. 🙄 oi. The first to hatch is doing awesome though, she’s super active and is steadily gaining weight.

Can you share the silkie seller in this thread or pm it to me? I might like to buy some silkie eggs. I’m assuming you’re happy with the way they were packaged and your hatch rate.

Of course! Here is a link to the items they have available: https://www.ebay.com/sch/dakurtz1/m...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

This was our 3rd order from them. My first 2 hatches with them, I am pretty sure it was my incubator and newbie lack of knowledge that led to poorer hatch rates. Things have been much better since I got my new bator! The first hatch we got a Blue/Lavender, a Buff, and a Partrige - only have the last 2 around now (I think that one of the dominant layer hens pecked the blue/Lavender on the head and killed it). And then the Black roo that we just lost was from the 2nd set of eggs - only one that hatch. It was a late fall hatch and we were having a terrible time keeping the humidity up in our old bator. Every order has been packed really well, have not received a broken egg from them yet. And communication with them is great!

I thought I had Another broody turkey. She would come and sit on the fake egg I left on the deck so I could take the real ones away. I would eventually chase her away to go eat and she would come back, so I nested up a fairly clean canvas tarp there (behind the bicycles we don't use this time of year) and put a dozen of the day's turkey eggs in there. In a couple hours she came and sat on them. All day and onto the twilight... I put out a dish of food and some water out for her. She spent the night and half the next day. I happened to be fairly near when she suddenly decided she'd had just about enough. :lau She started out of there like a rocket, knocked over the food dish and hurried off to find her friends. So... boiled turkey eggs. 🤷‍♀️

Well, we had 8/11 hatch, and all is well. Got another 15 from Meyer (one died en route). They are happily chirping and playing in the brooder in our mudroom. Hopefully this weekend, we can kit out the stock tank and move the livestock out of our house and into the garage. Now we just have to build another coop.

Sounds like us. Always building stuff plus livestock in the house. Good thing we don’t have cows.

I’m struggling with our incubators. They are all new I’m just new also. Last hatch in 2 incubators 6/34. 7/7 under broody hen plus I never had to check a temp or top up the water. Still trying. Have 18 eggs divided between 3 incubators right now. Trying to see if I can figure out where the problem is. Or if it’s all operator error. Other problem is poor fertility rate. The rooster only has 5 hens. Last hatch, none of the eggs from the buff Ameraucana hens hatched. Depending on how this hatch plays out, thinking about selling them to someone who wants laying hens.
After rambling, thanks for the link.

It's probably not the girls' fault. I'm told roosters will sometimes have favorites and not breed others, so you may need a different boy if you want all the eggs fertile.
