Second barred rock hatched, waiting on 7 more eggs.

I started with a doz. barred rock eggs, some were not fertile, The 6 barred rock doubles died, I did open them up. Super gross. Some eggs quit before day 10, some lived longer, but died before day 17. The lady who sold them said they would probably be doubled, and I knew they probably would not hatch. So I have these 3...

I'm so weak! Candled day 5 shipped eggs and it looks like 15/18 are fertile, so I'm pretty happy about that. I'll do it again in another few days.

I can hear my little duckling peeping away so I'm hoping to see an external pip tomorrow morning. Got the brooder all set up, just have to run to the feed store in the morning and get some chick starter and maybe a new dish! I haven't had goslings before, but have heard they aren't nearly as messy as ducklings. I really hope that's true.

Not true, lol. They're just as messy.

I had a terrible hatch rate this time. Almost as bad as my very first hatch. 9 out of 34 😭 4 were quitters & 21 were non-starters or not fertilized

The 9 we were blessed with are adorable though. I’ll try to get better photos tomorrow.

🙏 my Easter hatch does better. We candled those Saturday & had 2 that weren’t fertilized. They were from our newest layer so I didn’t have too much hope for them. We have 10 left, all we’re moving & had good veining. 🙏 they continue this way. I’m finally trying some fresh local eggs mixed with a few of ours so hopefully we’ll have a better hatch rate this time.
