I'm interested.

Requirements to participate:
1. Your chickens must be TRUE backyard chickens.2. Each hen must have at least 2 sq/ft inside and 4 sq/ft of outside space and be cared for properly (the Zone Leader will occasionally inspect the coop and conditions).
3. Each hen must have a name. This is one of the key selling points for the claim of “happy backyard chickens”.

If you are interested in participating, please reply to this thread with the following:
1) Number of hens that meet the requirements above
2) Average number of eggs you are currently collecting per week

1) 5 Girls

2) 30 eggs/week, 4-5 eggs per day.

You know, when you raise them as chicks, many chickens come to know their name.

Even when their name is "GET OUT OF THE GARDEN!"?

I *know* it's marketing (I'll bet the eggs get advertised as 'hormone-free' as well - as if commercial layers get hormone feed/shots!) And $5 a week would about cover feed costs.

I wonder if naming them Uno, Dos, Un, Dva, Une, Deux, and Otra would work...

I want in on this!!!!!! I have 4 Delaware/Hamp hens, 11 Speckled sussex hens, 4 California white leghorn hens, 3 Maran/Delaware hens. I will be watching for further info............

I would love to do this. I have 15 girls.

2 California Whites- Spot and Tres (aka Spot’s Sister or SS)
3 Ameraucanas – Caramel, Mocha and Latte
2 Sultans (bantam) – Doo and Crooked Beak
1 Buff Brahma (bantam) – Bahama Brahma
3 Cornish (bantam) – Betty White, Redhead, and Dark One
1 Black Sex Link – Micki
3 EE’s Fluffy, Wellie and Callie
They lay all color eggs including White (both large and medium), Blue, Mint Green, Olive, Terra Cotta, Dark Brown with large speckles, Pink and Tan (small) and Light Brown (small). I am getting about 8-10+ eggs a day right now. I currently sell to my co-workers and close friends for $ 2.00/dozen. I will have more eggs later this Summer as I have a bunch of 5 week old baby girls! Now to get the better half to get started on the new and improved coop.

Thank you for enabling us all to do more chicken math!!

(not to ruin the party, because I, too, am interested in the program, but what kind of liability will each backyard chicken owner have in the event of food poisoning? -Even if the egg didn't cause the poisoning, if it was an ingredient, you could still be part of a lawsuit - Is there insurance that can be purchased?)

It also seems to me that this is going to fall under the jurisdiction of each State's Dept of Agriculture and each BYC owner should be aware of the statutes that affect them.

Good question. We have 5 acres so our home owners insurance is a farm plan. It covers food poisoning I am sure cuse I checked just last week with my agent. I also have a friend who works for the state of Oklahoma Ag Food safety dept and had her send me the OK and fed egg laws. Been reading those for a couple weeks. (Legal makes my brain hurt!!)

They say they will have more details soon so I'm gonna continue along until they get them

How "egg-siting"!

I would love to participate here in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. I have 21 eighteen month old happy hens (Americanas, Buff Orpingtons, Silver Laced Wyandottes and Barred Rocks) who make a perfect harem for "The King" or Elvis as he is affectionately called. They are day rangers who produce between 8 and 10 dozen eggs per week (of course, I'd like to keep a dozen or so for my family to eat) so I'd anticipate being able to contribute between 6 and 8 dozen per week to this project. Will hold off on names until additional info is posted.

Looking forward to the next steps!

Very cool! I am more looking to market hatching eggs, but as a consumer, I LOVE this idea. We have nearly stopped going to restaurants as I want to know the food I eat was once happy and healthy. I hope the worms that eat me one day think as kindly on me... lol!

This sounds awesome! I don't think I can participate right now, but will it be open for application for a while? Say like maybe 3-4 months from now??
