You know, when you raise them as chicks, many chickens come to know their name. I've found that those who aren't named until later (Like those three girls in my marans pen) seem dejected, on the other hand, when I go to the backyard with treats, yelling the names of my chickens, they just come RUNNING! And they just seem so happy and content making them better layers even in 110 heat.

My chickens all come running to meet me, no matter what I say.

I think it has more to do with the treats I give them than their love for me

.... But hey, I'll take it!

Folks, Remember that Rob said, more details to answer your questions will come later.

I might be interested too, depending on how the details work out. I have about 50 girls that are cooped up at night just for safe keeping, then free range on 10 acres during the day. Rocks, Marans, and Ameraucanas and EEs.

I'm just getting started and am excited about raising some BYC's I have 4 Rhode Island Reds that are around 6 weeks,it's great to see programs like this and look forward to becoming a part of it in the future.

Thank you for enabling us all to do more chicken math!!

(not to ruin the party, because I, too, am interested in the program, but what kind of liability will each backyard chicken owner have in the event of food poisoning? -Even if the egg didn't cause the poisoning, if it was an ingredient, you could still be part of a lawsuit - Is there insurance that can be purchased?)

It also seems to me that this is going to fall under the jurisdiction of each State's Dept of Agriculture and each BYC owner should be aware of the statutes that affect them.

good question...mine too will begin laying in July! I would love to participate when they are laying so I can help pay for our coop.

Count me in, I have about 25 egg layers and average about a dozen or more eggs a day

I will post breed and names when Mr. Nifty has more info for us, just very time consuming right now
