Announcement April Fools 2013 - Big Announcement: BYC & Mark Zuckerberg / Facebook Partnership - BeakBook

Great idea! Can't wait for the updates!

If the name is beakbook you need to incorporate the other beaked denizens of our world(s), including parrots, eagles, and dragons.

How about cluckbook or facechook?

In fact, it's an opportunity to rethink everything. For example, you should rename the forum sections. Instead of raising backyard chickens, chicken breeds, social, other backyard poultry, etc., how about sunny side up, (for the social stuff), scrambled (for emergencies, predators, diseases), over easy (breeding and hatching), omelet (the broad panoply of other backyard poultry)...

I like the idea of promoting greater acceptance of backyard chickens as mainstream. There are too many wrong-headed ideas about chickens--noise, smell, etc.--and, as a result, too many anti-chicken laws and zoning restrictions. Just be careful you don't change backyardchickens.com too radically. You have a great website here and you don't want to mess it up with too many changes. Think about the backlash everytime Facebook changes some aspect of itself.

ChookBook
Much better name.

ETA: Now that I've read the entire thread thus far, I don't think I'd be crazy about losing BYC as it is and replacing it. I like the moderators here. I do have a FB acct, but have had to unfriend many people because of the content of their posts. I like that BYC is a family friendly site.

I have "liked" the BYC FB page, but as KYTPusher said, more to show my support of BYC. I never go to the FB page, I come straight to BYC. I also agree with what KYTPusher said about chickens becoming a fad. I already see it happening.

I'm not techy enough to really understand all the ins and outs. I like the way that BYC is organized. It's easy to find information, and that's the main reason why I became a member in the first place. I don't necessarily want everyone knowing my business either. It's something I don't like about how FB has evolved. The way posts stream on the screen...everyone knowing when I'm logged on. It's not so "private", even with the privacy settings high. I have two FB accts, one with my real name and one with fake name. I like FB, but wouldn't want BYC to become just like it.

I love the thought of getting the word out to more people on the benefits of raising your own food or buying local. I have always thought Americans have lost touch with where food comes from . I think it is wonderful that Mark understands this and wants to promote this on a bigger platform.. He has been able to grow a huge network with his vision. I am excited to see his and BYC thoughts on this venture.

I believe that since this has been in the works for seven months that it is likely a done deal and it will happen. With this all being said, I do have a Facebook account and only use it when one of my 19 family or friends post something and I am alerted. I set my security high as I don't like all the nonsense that pops up all the time. The pages and feeds are confusing and I very much dislike the lack of privacy. Since I know that many employers now track employees via Facebook, I know an off color comments or pictures can cost a person their job.

I use BYC everyday and check FB less than once a week and have really questioned if I want to keep the FB account. Believe me if my family starts seeing all my poultry pictures and my poultry chat they will glaze over and I am sure after a time block or delete me as a friend. My family does not have a passion for poultry and they really have no interest in hearing about it on FB. The members on BYC know more about my various chicken projects and breeds than my family which includes my husband. BYC is the place I come to hook up with people of a like mind.

I really don't see that BYC can conform to a FB platform and stay the nice family safe site it is now. I like what your hard work and the mods have done with BYC, but it's the members that make it what it is. I always like to keep an open mind and hope that all the people who are making the decisions will keep the concerns of the members in mind.

I vote for Backyard Chickens Book. The other names are cute and somewhat catchy but really why lose the entire concept for a cute name.

Whenever a well-known person becomes an advocate for a good cause, like backyard chicken keeping, it can be huge boost. I like that part. More people aware of the advantages and more people to change laws. More businesses picking up on the trend and expanding the retail availability of supplies which can bring costs down. But at what cost?

I don't like or "do" Facebook. I have a page only so I could look for some long-lost friends. I only go to the site a few times a year because for some that is their only means of communicating with others. I will NOT allow my children to have a Facebook page or even view mine. There is FAR too much inappropriate content published on Facebook and the privacy policies are horrible. It also pushes too much competition - who has the most friends - without concerning anyone with the quality of those relationships.

As a public company, the biggest focus of Facebook is to make a profit and anyone they partner with will have that become their biggest focus also. It is inevitable. I prefer to keep the focus on keeping chickens.

I don't like the name Beakbook. Sounds like an evil comic book. But I guess it would be appropriate if it happens because Facebook is all about face (appearances), and nothing about heart, or soul, or the rest of the body for that matter.

I think I "like"d the BYC Facebook page to show my support of BYC, not Facebook.

I can't tell you what features of Facebook I would like to see on BYC because, as I said, I don't "do" Facebook.

Getting the word out to the masses sounds like a good idea, but it shouldn't be done too quickly. In today's world, chicken-keeping is not for the faint of heart. We don't want it to become the new fad. It is more work than keeping a dog or a cat and look how many of those end up abandoned or abused because people did not realize the work it takes to own one. If Mark Zuckerburg is so civic and humanitarian minded, let him tackle the plight of pets in this country. If he can solve that one, then perhaps I would trust him with the welfare of chickens. Oh, wait, there is no money in that, so why bother.

Reaching out to people through publications like Mother Earth News, Hobby Farms and others is the best way to reach people who have the mindset to actually make a go of keeping chickens.

Bottom line is, if BYC becomes linked with Facebook and its policies and ideals, as much as I LOVE BYC, I would have to say good-bye. It would truly be a sad day.

Well said!

If BYC already has a facebook page why would they need another? If Mark Zuckerburg is so interested in helping promote chicken ownership why hasn't he done so already on his own? He certainly has the resources.

I don't "do" Facebook.
I have nothing against anyone who does, but if being connected to BYC means being connected to FB then I would be gone.

Having said that, I think the name BeakBook is weak and has a mean feeling to it.
ChookBook would be much sweeter and rounder and more welcoming.

I admit I skimmed over the details and will go back and see, but if this new endeavor means I am exposed to FB then I would have to leave.

Susan
