Much better name.ChookBook
Well said!Whenever a well-known person becomes an advocate for a good cause, like backyard chicken keeping, it can be huge boost. I like that part. More people aware of the advantages and more people to change laws. More businesses picking up on the trend and expanding the retail availability of supplies which can bring costs down. But at what cost?
I don't like or "do" Facebook. I have a page only so I could look for some long-lost friends. I only go to the site a few times a year because for some that is their only means of communicating with others. I will NOT allow my children to have a Facebook page or even view mine. There is FAR too much inappropriate content published on Facebook and the privacy policies are horrible. It also pushes too much competition - who has the most friends - without concerning anyone with the quality of those relationships.
As a public company, the biggest focus of Facebook is to make a profit and anyone they partner with will have that become their biggest focus also. It is inevitable. I prefer to keep the focus on keeping chickens.
I don't like the name Beakbook. Sounds like an evil comic book. But I guess it would be appropriate if it happens because Facebook is all about face (appearances), and nothing about heart, or soul, or the rest of the body for that matter.
I think I "like"d the BYC Facebook page to show my support of BYC, not Facebook.
I can't tell you what features of Facebook I would like to see on BYC because, as I said, I don't "do" Facebook.
Getting the word out to the masses sounds like a good idea, but it shouldn't be done too quickly. In today's world, chicken-keeping is not for the faint of heart. We don't want it to become the new fad. It is more work than keeping a dog or a cat and look how many of those end up abandoned or abused because people did not realize the work it takes to own one. If Mark Zuckerburg is so civic and humanitarian minded, let him tackle the plight of pets in this country. If he can solve that one, then perhaps I would trust him with the welfare of chickens. Oh, wait, there is no money in that, so why bother.
Reaching out to people through publications like Mother Earth News, Hobby Farms and others is the best way to reach people who have the mindset to actually make a go of keeping chickens.
Bottom line is, if BYC becomes linked with Facebook and its policies and ideals, as much as I LOVE BYC, I would have to say good-bye. It would truly be a sad day.
