Thankfully I was contacted by the hosts, before closing my account. Geeezz, that was fun and funny. Certainly got mine and hubby's BP up first thing this am. Later he called from work to check up with things, told him about the joke. It went around the office as a great gag. Hey, free, but good advertising! Happy I was around to get, uh, "taken in". Guess ya'll know how folks feel about FB. Don't think it helped their advertising one bit! Thanks again!

Hi Nifty-Chicken,

I will try to give you my thoughts and ideas in this comment! First off, I love the idea of educating more people about BYCs as a hobby/way of life. My parents raised chickens when I was little and my sister and I loved them and loved the end result of raising chickens as well. I hope to start my own small flock this year so my little boy will know where his food comes from and have some context for the pros and cons of commercial food processes once he's older. I admire people like Joel Salatin, Will Allen, Michael Pollan, the people who put together documentaries like Food, Inc. and Fresh, and communities like BYC - all people who either educate or show or both breakdowns in our relationship with our food. I like the idea of more people being exposed to BYC.

That said, here are some thoughts or concerns I have about a melding of the media delivery style of Facebook versus forums like BYC's current state: I use Facebook and forums for two completely different things as they are different delivery methods for different information. Facebook is a summarized data stream for keeping up with my family and friends. There are some vendors and things that I "like," on FB, but I generally do not either invest much in those FB pages or receive much information from them. Facebook, for me, is like having a stream of headlines without content. Facebook's layout just is not user friendly for delivery of meaningful content. Heck, I think Pinterest is a better platform for delivering useful content than Facebook is.

When I need content with substance like needing to ask questions, gather information, or to deliver feedback or information, forums offer the best (from what I have seen) current iteration of platform for doing so. If the BYC forums were to be radically changed in such a way as to deliver information the way Facebook does, I have serious doubts that I would continue to use it (despite my LOW post count, I consume loads of information from BYC and really enjoy the community - and I even visit your sponsor links and hope to make a chick purchase using those or member sales).

This is some amazing news that has been in the works for the past 7 months. We’re excited to finally announce it to our community!!!

Starting today, BYC will be partnering directly with Facebook’s very own Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, to help establish the idea of raising backyard chickens to the same level as raising a dog or cat.





Some Background:


About two years ago, news broke that Mark Zuckerberg, the founder / CEO of Facebook, had decided to only eat animals that he, himself, had killed. For more details on this, see here: http://mashable.com/2011/05/27/mark-zuckerberg-eats-kills/

We’re not sure, but we suspect that some of Mark’s earlier experiences with chickens (if you’ve seen the movie “The Social Network” about the creation of Facebook you’ll know to what we’re referring) have helped shape some of his views and ideas on raising chickens.

Because of these and many other factors, Mark has become even more familiar with the many benefits of raising backyard chickens and is a huge proponent of the growing trend. With last year’s IPO of Facebook and the company being flushed with cash, Mark knew it was time to really put some resources behind some very worthy causes. He first stumbled on our huge BYC Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/raisingbackyardchickens) and then found our community here on BYC. Mark was impressed by the amazing group of individuals we have here and the incredible passion our members have for the proper care of backyard chickens.

Around July of last year, we were contacted by Mark and have since been working quietly together to find ways to really promote chickens as “the new dog”.

The Plan:


The specific details of the new partnership are still being worked out, but we have a few ideas on how we’ll be able to bring raising backyard chickens fully into the mainstream. One of the most exciting ideas that came together during a late night brainstorming session was a mashup of BYC and Facebook called “BeakBook”. Again, the details are still being ironed out, and we can’t share too much information because new and potentially HUGE game-changing ideas are so quickly stolen and copied on the internet… but expect “BeakBook” to be core to the execution of our strategy!

We’re sorry we can’t share more details with you all, but we felt it was more important to share this wonderful news sooner than later, especially so we can get your ideas and feedback.
