APRIL Hatch a long ......Anyone?

You win!! Ive seen a lot of baby chicks on BYC but this is a first for me to see ostritch! Wow! How heavy and large are they new? what do they eat? I think my son invested in 3 ostritch h eggs many years ago but whoever tried to hatch them..none hatched. Are these from your own birds?

Hah thanks! :) They are about 3 - 4.5 pounds coming out of the egg and about the size of an oversize feathered softball :D Yes, these eggs are from our own birds.

What a fabulous find wow .How weird j ust for auction or going out of business?Arent ostritch sort of dangerous?$60 for a shell though whohoo.. sounds like my kinda business!!How do you take an egg away from a hen that size? chair and whip?
One year in the cow pasture across from me there was one running up and down the fence.Think it was lost and somehow got in there. That was a suprise scene.
Dont they run really fast like 30 miles an hour?

Incubator: Believe it or not I found that Hatchrite on eBay. The man seriously did not know what he had, didn't care, just wanted that enormous incubator gone. Okey dokie! So I obliged him. 750.00 and some nail biting shipping arrangements later and it was on my doorstep.

Ostrich Eggs for Crafts: We only charge 20.00 for our empties by the way, not 60.00 :)) I have a bucket of 20 to do this weekend. Fun fun.

Getting the Eggs: Well... first an ostrich is different than a chicken regarding how they treat eggs. When a hen puts down eggs, the rooster protects the nest... and broods the eggs when there are enough to brood. This is at 5 - 8 eggs. The trick is harvesting the eggs once per day, usually in the mornings or evenings when they are grazing. I just drive into the pasture, right up to the nest and make sure I'm not about to get surprised by a 'ninja' ostrich. Then I jump out. Collect the eggs. Put them into a 5 gallon bucket and drive back out. No whip or chair necessary :) But it's the rooster you have to worry about, not the hen.

Speed: Ostrich can run 45mph for up to 30 minutes at a time. No, you can't outrun them :)

Hey im in just set some leghorn and maran crosses also special sesexx maran crosses they are due Apr 17th

Awesome! Here are pics of the lavendar o crosses that have hatched so far :)

My friends and family shook their heads when we moved to the country from New Orleans almost 3 years ago... When you look at this sunrise... how could you ever NOT want to be here? :D

Day 14 for me. I candled yesterday and 14/14 have little babies inside. I CAN NOT wait until the 5th. I'm freaking out! Hahaha. :D there's nothing better than hatching out eggs yourself!

Hey guys, I need some help! It looks like the yolks in 2 of my Welsh Harlequin eggs have ruptured! They were fine when I got them, I'm just wondering what might have caused it?? After 2 days of incubating they just burst..

I have heard that it can be caused by rough handling but have never experienced it myself and I'm guessing you don't go around shaking your eggs lol :) how far along are they?

They weren't roughly handled at all, they were laid fresh and I picked them up. They've been incubating for just over 3 days now. I can already see veins in the other eggs, but nothing in these two.
