Day 21 here:
I woke up to 2 pips! one of them is verrry low on the egg.. it is in a carton.. I might take it out and lay it on it's side if it doesn't progress... there isn't room in the carton for the shell to fall away at all..

I just hatched a wonderful batch of mutt chickens.- they are almost 15 hours now. I am going to be overnighting them to Wisconsin tonight. Is there anyway that I can tell if they are roos or hens just by how long their bodies are or any other good ideas? I know that the feather technique doesn't work because I tried it my last (and only) hatch - or at least it doesn't for mutt chicks:) Can I tell by the size of their heads? Thanks so much!

I meant to say that I think the breed combo in the first chick picture is a black star and an Ameraucana. It has furry feet and the all white one is a Russian Orloff.

SUB...you know how the neck reflex on a chick makes him peck the shell to get out?...Well my therory is its the brain reflex that makes us HAV E to go check the bator every 5 minutes...cant make myself stop!! Always this way..part of the addiction.

Everyones photos are so clear and good..mine are never that way..is everyone using their cell phone?Mine are either dark or a flash glare.
I use my phones camera, but turn off the flash. I shine a flashlight through 1 window, then take the pic through the other. Seems to work well for me most of the time.

We think way to much alike! There are so many ways I could screw up a hatch when they start pipping I'm bouncing all over the house.
I think a porcelain d'Anver is pipped but it is in the corner and I think the pip is one the back side to make viewing more difficult. A cuckoo was moving like it's little legs were already sticking out the bottom.

I just spent some time outside with the big chickens to distract myself from my incubator, and moved my 5 and 8 week old chicks out into the run for some fresh air..

I came back to see a BLOOD coming out of the pipped egg.. omg.. I had a heart attack.. I brought it into a steamy room and I put some cornstarch on it.. I think the bleeding stopped. I can see the chick breathing, barely. hold on little chick...

after that fiasco, I decided to look at the egg that pipped at the bottom. I took it out of the carton and laid it down. I think this chick has died :( it isn't moving, and it leaked liquid out of the egg onto the carton...

bleeding pip:

incorrect pip (bottom) after I took it out of the carton. it is not moving or peeping, I think it is dead...

I decided to lay this one on it's side. the air cell is on the side of the egg..

AND NOW, we have another external pip!

I meant to say that I think the breed combo in the first chick picture is a black star and an Ameraucana. It has furry feet and the all white one is a Russian Orloff.

We purchased some chicks last summer in a neighboring town and a couple there told us to hold the chicks in the palm of our hand with the chick on their backs, if the legs go out straight they are pullets and if they curl up the legs or kick a lot they are cockerels. This was the first we had heard of this method, but the four that we tested this theory on were all hens. So, that being said, we have tried this on our newly hatched chicks (6) and they all came up pullets, but I have a Plymouth Barred Rock mix in the bunch with a white dot on its head ( I believed that to be a mark of cockerel)?
Not 100%, but some people on line feel that it is. Time will only tell with mine.

It sounds like everyone has been busy. My chicks are here. I had one hatch the evening of day 20/Tues. as I mentioned before. When I got to my classroom on day 21/Wed., I found one more had hatched overnight. Another hatched as my students were arriving so about half of them were able to watch. I also noticed one pipped on the wrong end which I was concerned about. Throughout the day I could see it's little beak moving in there so I knew it was alive and breathing and decided to wait and see at least until this morning. One more hatched late afternoon of day 21 so that made four hatched out of the nine that made it to lock down. This morning I found seven chicks in the incubator so three had hatched overnight including the one pipped at the wrong end. One more hatched at lunch time so my entire class was able to watch that one. It is the smallest and still seems a bit goupy on its back but walks around and such. So, that only leaved one egg unhatched. I went ahead and candled it since there was no external pip or movement that I could see. I don't see any movement in there or an internal pip that I can pick out. I don't think it's alive anymore but I still left it in the incubator when I took the rest out and put them into the brooder tonight. I'm really liking having chicks again and have now bought myself some Lavender Ameraucana eggs to hatch out next. I think it'll be fun to have some blue eggs in there. :)
Pictures to come as my internet connection is once again acting slow and I have to get to bed. Sorry! Besides, hopefully I can get some good fluffy pictures of them tomorrow.

My latest hatch is complete and I finally feel like I'm getting the hang of it!!! I put 7 eggs into lockdown this time and 6 out of 7 hatched with the last egg being shrink wrapped so not sure what happened with that one, maybe not enough humidity in the part of the 'bator it was in? Anyway, that is a MUCH better hatch rate than I was dealing with the last two times. I lowered my hatch humidity slightly this time and paid very close attention to it. I am using an older LG as my hatcher and I didn't like to use the water reservoirs before but I did this time and the results speak for themselves. I'll be doing that again next time! Three more eggs go into lockdown tomorrow and then it will be ten days before another bigger set of eggs is due to go in. I've been hatching my own eggs from my flock of Barnevelders and so far I'm getting around 80% male chicks. I'm hoping that increasing the numbers that make it through to hatch will give me more females but it didn't work this time, lol...only one girl out of 6.

Well, happy hatching and I'll report on the last three eggs (that go into lockdown tomorrow) after the weekend!

Now for the real excitement to begin. I just candled to check aircells again and heard chirping. I have 2 internal pips(one EE and a BLRW) so far only 9 more to go out of my first batch anyhow.
