April Hatch Along

This is only my second time hatching and first time hatching shipped eggs. Well, I'm going to be in trouble because I told my husband only 6/12 at the most would hatch because they were shipped and I just woke up to 9 walking and peeping and 1 more zipping out. They were blrw eggs I got off eBay and traveled from Missouri to California. Also, I made the mistake of putting them right in the incubator with the turner on and then read after about letting them settle. I thought for sure I would have a terrible hatch rate. I just wanted to share my excitement and relief with this hatch. All my new babies look perfect and I couldn't be happier! Now to tell the husband about my chicken math...

This gives me hope! Congrats on the 9 new chicks!

6 Lav Orps hatched, bunches of pips and zips going on.

But the bad news....I was watching one zip that wasn't breaking the shell very well. It zipped completely around and then stopped. I thought I saw movement, so I waited.... I waited too long. It died. Fully zipped!!! :rant But after I pulled it out, trying to revive it, I noticed it didn't have much of an egg tooth. Everything else looked fine, had a little belly left to absorb, but nothing major. :/

Guess that's the breaks.

Darn it, darn it...I hate when they're sooo close to getting out and they don't make it. -:hugs

I know! So frustrating! Makes me watch the rest of them like a hawk!!

But in better news, I've finally hatched my first black split since my very first set of lavs over 2 years ago. I have one black/split hen, but have never before gotten another split. Now I have another! :jumpy

My malpositioned chick is zipping!! My eyes are glued to the incubator. I think her membrane may be a little dry...I'm conflicted about whether to dab some water (or ointment; I have some Green Goo. Would that be okay?).

Give it a little time - anywhere from 15-45 minutes. If it really looks like it's not making progress, go ahead and intervene. A lot of malpos need help. I've never used green goo, but plain Neosporin (no topical anesthetic) works well. Also, just keeping it moist with a warm, wet paper towel.
