April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

awsome article! I am a bit worried though.... as yeasterday morning the temp was 108... now this is still air and I think they can be higher than forced air but I do not know how long they were there as I checked them last at around 1-2am and they were at 100 and at 7am they were 108 and they had only been set for 3-4 days but 2 are HUGE the size of a swan egg the other 6 are normal size... when I candeled today both large eggs were developing and then two of the larger but normal sized ones... they are now in by brinsea...hopefully I can save them!

First time incubating. Welsumer, Cochin, Black Jersey Giants and Assorted Purebred eggs have been delivered. Just waiting on 10 Polish eggs to arrive. I bid on whatever was the most economical, as I doubt many will hatch my first try at this. Will work out the kinks hopefully.

I had my best hatching rate the very first time I incubated. This could be because my incubator was brand new with no bacteria or because I was neurotic about making sure everything was perfect, (like, literally staying home from work 3 out of 4 days a week to stare at the eggs) . Now I tend to sit on my hands and go about my day. I still stare at them way more then needed but I try not to second guess what I've been doing.

I will be using a used (but sterilized) little giant still air incubator. Found it on craigslist. Has an egg turner too. I've had in on for a week, tweaking things, and so far it has stayed pretty stable. As long as I LEAVE IT ALONE! Lol. My goal is to pretty much put the eggs in and ignore it except to candle on days 7 and 14. I am sure though, that I will also be staring at the eggs non-stop.

I set 12 blrws & 9 olandsk dwarf eggs today. Both were shipped & have air cell issues. I am incubating them in egg cartons & I may try not turning them for a week. I haven't done very well not turning shipped eggs for 3 days in the past so might as well try something new. Good luck everybody!

I'll join in the April hatch!! I have 5 (I think) of my own barnyard mixed eggs in the bator now, due to hatch 1Apr. I should be getting some more hatching eggs from a agriculture High school today or tomorrow of white leghorns (only because I don't have that breed) and production reds. These are just for fun and will probably sale most of them once hatched.

I currently am also in lockdown w coturnix quail eggs, due to hatch thurs. Oh and I currently have 21 1 to 2 week old chicks in a brooder...there are more chicks and chickens but just to name a few. Lol This is truely addictive!! :-)

Wow - day 14 for the goose eggs (purchased tolouse, embden and t/e crosses) and all looks good in all of them!

With 16 ducklings successfully hatched last week (of 18 that went into lockdown), I have high expectations! LOL

I can't wait. Third time incubating, but put three of these eggs under a broody girl. We'll see who's first and better - hers or the 10 I have in the 'bator. My money is on the broody girl's...

Now - I just have to find them homes, hopefully before they hatch!

Wow I wish our local high school would do something cool like that. It is a pretty rural school. With all us country folk it would only make sense. :)
