april hatchings everyone

Make that three hatched. Wow they are really popping. All browns so far. Come on A&Ms!

Four now. Still all browns. Glad to know my hens are so fertile but need some A&Ms for my poor lonely Bashful.

SAD UPDATE. One of the chicks isn't able to stand up. The Mrs. tried to assist it in standing, but it flopped onto its side. If it isn't up and about in an hour, I'll have to put it down.

Five browns and 1 A&M at last check. Keeping them all in incubator until dry or later this evening. Now off to finish building my grow-out pen. Looks like I'm gonna have to kick out the 3-week-olds sooner than I thought.

Nine browns and 2 A&Ms. Think I will wait until morning to put these in the brooder. They are all still really wet and I have some more pipping now so don't want to mess up the humidity while it's working so well. I'm excited because this is the best hatch I've ever had. First was 5/24 with 4 surviving, and second was 9/30 with 7 surviving. 11/31 so far. Since I only put 15 browns in to start with and have 9 browns, it means my colony is making very fertile eggs. Good to know.

congrats! !!

Today's hatch at the end of the day ended up with 12 total. As you can see, there are 10 browns and only 2 A&Ms. Still holding out hope for some of the other eggs though since there were a couple pipping earlier. *crossing fingers*

Here's some of my 7 almost 3-week-olds that are going to the grow-out pen in about a week.

: Apparently, all you have to do is "suggest" that they will be culled and they "perk right up". The little guy spent most of the morning in the incubator and had his hatchmates falling over him for a couple of hours this morning. We took the other chicks out and put them into the brooder so we could see if he would be able to get up on his own. Almost an hour to the minute, the little guy who couldn't get up was running around the incubator knocking into the 4 remaining eggs, much to my relief. Mama watched him for a bit in the brooder to make sure none of the other chicks picked on him. The crazy thing is, he's running around and we can't tell which one he was.

On a side note, at lunch, I forgot to mention that my 16yo daughter spotted one little chick with it's toes on one foot all curled under. For now, "Nubbie" seems to be getting around, so I'm hoping it works itself out. I did a little search, and the chick has a riboflavin deficiency, quite possibly from a dietary defiency from the hen. Here is the link. At work tomorrow, I'm going to try to remember to bring home some medical tape to make shoe as described in this link.
