Araucana thread anyone?

anyhoo.....play around. enjoy. have fun. life is short. let us know what you come up with.

as a final note, i'm not talking from a genetic point of view, or science at all, really. talking from experience. mixing the two was a fun project and i'm happy with the outcome. of course, it's taken me a while to get where i'm at with it. but totally worth it. and i selected for the things i wanted. i strongly recommend doing the same!

I have two "projects" I want to pursue. One is developing a blue egg layer that will eventually be a dark color so they blend in with their natural surroundings. I chose the white leghorn for their egg production qualities plus they are a small chicken. My poor Araucana cockerel has been renamed Cowboy. Poor thing tries to breed with the big birds in my flock. I know you shouldn't laugh but it is hysterical.

Those big girls take off and he hangs on for h*** and high water! Second, is I love the color of Cowboy - he is supposed to be a wheaten bbr. I want to pursue that in the purebred Araucanas. I have the one pullet now and I will have four more started Araucana pullets coming from Chicken Scratch Poultry in May or June. They will be about 8 weeks old and they are supposed to be tufted and rumpless. I asked them to send darker colors.

Have a question. Anyone crossed an Araucana with a blue laced red Wyandotte?

I will take a shot at predicting the outcome.Females should be blue and black 50/50.Not likely to seeany leakage.Males black and blue 50/50.Leakage should be close to 100%.May get some lacing.It is said you need 2 copies of the pattern gene to get lacing.But then look at these from a golden laced wy over some buff project ameraucana carrying dominate white.Due to sex linked gold I got color in both sexes.The one silver laced cockerel was a fluke caused by dominate white.He is split for silver and gold.Hope this helps.

They are GORGEOUS! That just fueled the fire! I am hoping to get some lacing. But if not oh well. I do want to try it once just to fill my curiosity. I can picture a BLR Araucana, not even sure it is possible, but maybe one day. It would be a spectacular looking bird in my opinion!

Have a question. I just hatched a batch of araucana eggs and half of them were upside down and died. I have hatched several before but never this breed. Anyone else had this problem ?

Did you hatch them in the carton? Were they placed on their side to hatch. And were they accidentally pointed the wrong way down for incubation. I have not had this problem in the past, but those are a few reasons I can think of.

They were candled and placed in a turner with the air sac up till day 18. Then placed in a carton to hatch. Never had this happen before and wondering why they hatched upside down.
