Now that DT is gone I am dying to get my breeding pens going...but Ugly Betty is holding up the program. She is one of the blue birchens I bought from Jason Fishbein (the single tufted pullet, and quite honestly kind of ugly

). She will be 11 months old tomorrow and has yet to lay an egg.

I contacted Jason a few days ago and asked if he knew if she was laying when he shipped her, and as I suspected he didn't. She was in a grow out pen with many others. He did say he still has some pullets in that pen that aren't laying yet. I can't put her with a male until she starts. I do not feel Bonita is big enough or mature enough to be put in with a male yet, so once I get the 2 blue birchens moved I will put her and Lil' Girl (the bantam araucana) in the integration coop by themselves.
So yesterday I removed a section of fence that was keeping a 2' distance between Buck & Mano and the blue birchen girls. I wanted them to start getting familiar with each other but neither Buck or Mano will leave the other end of the run (where Mama, Bonita and Lil Girl are), they are stuck to them like glue through the separating fence. I'm going to try to lure the boys down to the other end with treats today.
Now that I have separated the boys and girls Mano's tufts are coming back in! (Pullets and hens are notorious tuft-pickers). Last time I saw his right tuft it was one huge mottled tuft, and now there are at least 4 tufts coming in on that side, one looks like it will be white. (Mano is the one that was mottled as a chick). I can't wait until they sprout!
