Araucana thread anyone?

Forgive me, but I thought BBRs were supposed to have yellow legs? Perhaps if I had my Standard of Perfection, keeping all these little details straight would be easier.....

Looking forward to seeing baby photos!!

Nope, BBR is supposed to have willow legs. Not a huge deal to overcome. I have a few nice looking willow legged BBR looking pullets I can put with him.

Nope - too late. I adore this baby. Seriously Lanae, I could hear your voice in my head (your computer voice I guess, since I've never actually heard your other, human voice) as the tufts were drying and my heart was expanding and exploding with joy over this little chick. I tried. I really did try. It didn't help that my parents were here and my father, who has never given a second glance at the chicks that keep filtering through the brooder boxes in my dining room, noticed this funny looking one and began to come in asking if "Penguin" was still doing OK. Those tufts are so cute. It's pointless trying to resist them.

I know what you mean Megan. As each chick hatches I first look for tufts, then check rumplessness. If it has both, before I can stop myself, I fall in love and start planning its whole life.

Well, Araucanas in general are hard to come by - especially tufted. In my experience, the bantams are far easier to find than the Large Fowl. Exciting that he let you bring home eggs! Did you see the that may have fertilized these eggs? I'm have the funniest mental images as I try to figure out what a Turken/Araucana cross would look like. You have to post pics if you get any rumples naked necked chicks running around. We have one Turken hen out with our main egg laying flock, no Turken roosters, and nearly each time someone goes broody and hatches a clutch out there there it least one delightfully butt ugly chick with a little bald neck - which I find amazing because there are about 40 other hens out there with her, everyone a better egg layer than she is. I'm pretty sure, having watched this happen again and again, that the naked neck must be a genetically dominant trait.
Good luck with your little blue eggs!

Ya the turken was frizzeled too! The Araucana rooster was not tuffed. Sorry I didnt take pics. Does any one on this fourm have black rumpless Araucana bantams? I would love to buy some or eggs.

Amazing photos everyone! Thanks for sharing them. I have one chick out (black) and 2 more pipped of 5 total set to hatch today then in 6 more days, 5 more eggs due to hatch. I have nearly 30 in the incubator now and they've been laying like crazy so I have more than I can hatch and advertised locally for someone with a couple broody hens or incubator to hatch some for me and I found someone with a large incubator to incubate all I will have by tomorrow. I'll take them to her tomorrow. I would love to buy a cabinet type incubator by next spring. They're for sale all over around here right now and it's so tempting but I don't really have a place chosen to set one up yet. Where does everyone else have their incubator set up? My little styrofoam incubator is on one of my 2 desks, it sets right behind me as I sit at the computer. It doesn't get any direct sunlight or much change in room temps here.

Does a larger, cabinet type incubator have any particular requirements as far as where to put it? does it need to be in a draft free area? can it get cold in the room or does it have to be in a heated room? Sunlight a problem? I'd also thought I might make one myself from parts from a styrofoam type and use a non-working wine cooler or glass door reach in cooler (although my husband usually repairs this type to re-sell). I figure I can buy some auto turners and drill holes for the wires to come out to a surge protector board. I'm looking at all my options for a larger incubator without spending $700 and up for the ones I've been seeing for sale that are gigantic and probably more than I need anyway. I'd like to be able to hatch up to 200 max I think.

Here is a couple of new pics. My camera and the operator are hopeless but here goes.

Birchen Roo and one of his hens

White Roo and his two hens. One is my tiny tiny girl. I am hoping to get bigger girls out of her. We will see. I love her and her sisters shape and coloration

One of my duckwing pullets. She is a color combination of a silver, golden, and BBR hen all thrown together. It is turning out nice

A nice double tufted black pullet. She has medium sized well balanced tufts.

This is my double tufted BBR ish roo chick. His tufts are so well balanced. His leg color is wrong, but I have some really willow legged pullets to pair him with if he turns out nice enough to breed to.

Lanae, your birds are beautiful... how far is Willits from the Bay Area?

I think I'm at the point where I might just cave and get some Araucana eggs, if you have any available...
