Are Cooper Maran eggs that much darker than other brown eggs?

Umm, that would be the Cuckoo Marans, which as said before, are usually from hatcheries and yes, have very pale eggs. As you see on this thread, us with true, non-hatchery Marans most certainly don't have normal brown eggs. There's a lot of mis-informed people out there.

Don, I'm curious...what makes you think this picture was retouched, and why do you have the opinion that this person has "mixed up junk"? What are you seeing that tells you this....I am curious....

Wynette, Comment was aimed at Marans egg pictures in general not an certain picture, I didn't quote any certain message, I can tell you one thing and that is if anyone is buying Marans strictly from internet ads, do not be surprised at the egg color when the eggs arrive. When I refered to mixed up junk was talking about Marans where color of the egg is all the person is looking for in the Marans.

When I am referencing a message I always quote the post I am talking about. Lately on the Marans forum there has been eggs where there are several picture showing difference in egg color from each picture taken with same eggs.

Will keep my comments to myself in the future since I am not in the little click and for sure do not want to be in the little circle. Don

Don, I myself have not been on the Marans thread much, as you know...I just was SERIOUSLY wondering if you saw something that told you a pic had been tampered with. I was not accusing you of anything. Me, I am not good with computers, and I would probably not be able to tell.

It's really hard to get a true pic of a dark egg or green/blue/olive colored ones as well. It's a huge frustration for me. The pic of the eggs in my avatar was one of the VERY VERY few that, after looking at the pic and looking at the eggs on my desk, I was thrilled with, as it was truly exactly as they appear in person. But, to duplicate it...well...I'm at a loss!

You're for SURE right about doing your research...recall you & I had a discussion on the forum about buyers doing research into the sellers. I wholeheartedly agree, and tell folks to most definitely do your research!

With Marans, I keep egg shells that I can send to folks if they should want to know the darkest my girls lay. Often, folks get upset when they see egg color as it does get lighter the longer the hens lay. I always keep the first darkest eggs my gals lay so that folks will see how dark the potential is that of the eggs they hatch, the gals will lay that dark as well.

On the photo tampering. I find it sad that someone would feel the need to do that. Goodness, it's just so much easier to be honest!

Wynette, When taking true pictures of Marans you must have plenty of light, I use a light box similiar to the one I made for taking pictures of the chickens. The one I use for the eggs is the one I bought for taking pictures of antique Glass that I sell on ebay. When you see the pictures in ads of eggs for sale that show the eggs to be darker than the egg picture scale they are doing this without enough light. If we cut the lights down it will make the eggs to appear darker.

The reason I stated look at the type mostly when ordering eggs is because at least we can tell if the type is good or bad. When we buy eggs we should stay away from the white leg males, white in wing and tail and the white undercolor. The thing is we can breed Marans with these faults and they will lay some dark eggs. All these faults will reproduce when they are used in the breeding pen.

There should be a way to seperate the Marans threads so that you have one for breeding to the APA SOP and one just for breeding for eggs color with no concern for Marans type. This way I think there would be less new people getting their feelings hurt. They will never learn anything with out the honest truth about their Marans. Don

How horrible. Must be hatchery birds, but then again cuckoos don't lay as dark as BCMs. I've never seen a Marans egg that was as light as a RIR or Orp.

Those are either hatchery, or came from a very poor breeder. Then again I've had hatchery cuckoos and they laid a darker egg then either of those breed, but not as dark as the better birds I have now.

Wellies have nice dark eggs. Not as dark as Marans, but darker than your other two breeds.

You need to look at eggs and birds from much better stock than your friend has. I feel bad for her since she hasn't seen real Marans eggs. What a shame.

I think it has to do with the new features being added to BYC - Thus, there's been a LOT of excessive but accidental posting lately.
