Are my chickens keepig me from a roommate?

I'm going to have to have a proud moment for my dogs....

My dogs do not constantly demand attention nor do they smell. The house is cleaned weekly/bi-weekly depending on shedding season. Neither of the resident dogs shed much at all. Both are crate trained and respond to commands. Everyone's response to my heeler is 'he's so well trained!'

rainplace - I know, right!! The chickens have a small spot of the yard, and they are going in next to the garden. My backyard is a little messy as it is a constant work in progress...hmmm....

Debiraymond - I'm hoping YOU are right ;-) I'm not ready to stop fostering or stop owning chickens...maybe lowering the rent would help...

Your dogs sound very well taken care of and trained.

I think the right person will come along.

I'm not saying your dogs are badly behaved, it's just that most people aren't typically as enamored with dogs as their owners are. I love my dogs dearly but I understand that someone else might not, and I don't want someone else training on my animals. It's just one more potential area for disagreement with a roommate. If they're dog people they'll probably have their own dog already and not wish to chance pet conflicts.

I would say its the dogs too. I would not rent a room in a place with that many dogs in the house. I have two dogs in my home, but its my home and I'm the only one who lives here. If I was looking to rent, I wouldn't want two or three big dogs in the house. I would have no say over what they do or where they go, and that just wouldn't work for me.

I had a roomate just after college who had a dog, a gorgious well behaved husky. It worked out fine. However I'm not a dog person, and 3 would be too much for me. I doubt it's the chickens, assumming no roosters?

Absolutely no roosters - I could not even handle that! My girls are happy just as they are.

Right now I am foster-less, with just two good dogs in the house and my girls outside....next strategy is to post 'for rent' ads by the green tree hugging folks!*

*no offense intended to green tree hugging folks, I would consider myself one.

I also think it's more likely to be the dogs, not the chickens.

Since the 3 chickens are kept outside, that shouldn't be a issue (as long as the coop is kept clean and doesn't smell).

Many people don't have pets and don't want to live with large dogs inside the house (even if the house is clean). For those who are doglovers, they most likely already own a dog and might not think there is room to bring another dog into the mix at your house.

We have two dogs ourselves, but it would be different living with dogs that weren't ours - kind of like the difference between living with your own kids and living with someone else's kids.

You still should be able to rent your room - it just may take a little longer.

hahaha - Maybe I should post on a dog forum and see if they think it's the chickens

Please put good thoughts out there that I am sent a dog-loving roomie!

If you are having trouble finding a renter you may need to change your price. The economy is horrible. Would you rather have a vacant room instead of $350 or $400/month?

For me, chickens in the backyard would not be an issue. A pitbull (or a chow) would. The chow because I have known people who had to put their chows or chow mixes down for attacking people even though they were nice dogs for many years. They just snapped one day. I think they are just crazy. As for pitbulls, anything that can fit my head in it's mouth is not something I want to hang with.
