Hello everyone! A while ago I found 2 broody seramas sat on 3 eggs, candled all of them and they all seemed to be fertile. I don't know how long they were sat on them, but 1 has hatched just yesterday and seems to be healthy. The other 2 haven't shown any signs of external or internal pipping. I haven't heard any chirps from either of them, and when I tried the water method there was a tiny wiggle in one of the eggs. I don't know if I should be concerned, but I'm quite new to hatching, so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. :fl (Also, if needed, I can send candling photos) Thank you!! :frow

Hi,

When more than one hen sits on eggs, there can always be trouble. Yours must've worked out.

If some eggs hatch and some didn't, I always give them a couple more days. If the mother leaves her eggs to take the chicks to food/water, I'd either put those eggs in the incubator or fix a sideways box on the floor of the coop with her nest and her eggs in it. Nearby have a feeder with chick crumbles and water. She'll most likely come back to sit on them.

If after a couple of days, I'd candle the eggs. You'd see some sort of movement if they are alive.

So what did you wind up with?

Hello!
So sorry for the late reply, they ended up not hatching sadly. We left them under the hen that was still broody (as the other was taking care of the chick) and around 3 or 4 days later there was still nothing, no movement at all. They did seem to have weird black patches in them, which was strange. I was scared they would explode, as I've heard that can happen sometimes..
However, the one chick seems happy with her mum. I'm pretty sure it's a hen, and her mum is taking care of her well :) Thank you so much for the help! :D

Awe, that's a good thing the chick has a mom, maybe two of them. 😊 It'll get abandoned by them when it's around 6-weeks or so old though. Are they in a run or free-range? If in a run, it may do okay there, but free-range on its own would be a bit scary.

Right now theyre both in a cage inside, so I can keep an eye on them. When it's sunny I sit outside with them and let them run around together with the other chickens. (I keep a really close watch so the chick is safe) I'm trying to slowly introduce it to the others. All the times I've done this though, the mom has ran off somewhere and left the chick in the middle of the garden, just chirping and looking confused! (Don't worry, I babysit the chick until she comes back!) I also noticed that the mom has stopped sharing food with the chick, she used to feed it mealworms but now she just eats them herself. She steals the chick's food as well.. Is this part of the abandoning process? This is the first time I've had a chick with its mom, so I'm sorry if this is a silly question! (Also, so sorry about the late reply again!)

I also have another chick hatching (Yesterday it pecked a hole through the tiny shell and I could see a tiny beak, it was so cute!!) There's 3 broody hens all sat on it though, and I'm kind of worried they'll start fighting over it when it's hatched.. :fl
