Are my chickens sick?? they laid a black egg!!

Hmm. Wouldn't it be interesting if you have a new egg colour!

I'm opting for some zombie reference in the chicken breed. Or halloween... Hallow Egger or somesuch.

Perhaps you had a stray cayuga in there during the day, come and gone? Anyone near you own cayugas?

I went into my coop this morning to find a solid black egg right in the middle of there coop on the ground outside! I thought my chickens were suppose to lay white and brown eggs the breeds i have are Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons and Rhode Island Reds. Is this normal or is one of them sick?? I only have one chicken laying right now that started about a week ago they are only a few months old so i dont know why this egg is large and black? In the picture is the black egg next to a brown egg that were found together this morning

My dad woulda said, "Here, Ring ... another rabbit," upon seein' this post ~'-)

Duck? Emu? OK, ok ... waiting for the punch line.

Please, crack it and post a photo!

This is weird, I don' know any breeds to do this, but if your chicken got into and e-regular liquids, it could have effected the color of the egg (evil apple juice! jk) but this could be serious! leave the chicken be and wait and see if this could have been just a little, 'glitch' in it's system. If it lays another of it's 'special' eggs, post again. I'll continue to do more research.

It appears that my original thoughts were in error, despite what my Dad woulda said, as this appears to be an exceptionally rare egg. The Greater Emucayuga tends to lack the instinctive qualities that many other species of Aves have, and tend to lay their eggs w/in the nests of others.

The Lesser Emucayuga

I couldn't find any pictures of The Greater Emucayuga, as it was once believed to be extinct. However, there have been some found w/in a few small areas. They are nocturnal, as clearly indicated by the most unusual coloring of their eyes. They are far more rarely seen than The Lesser Emucayuga.

You should be certain to cover your run, and close your coop. Although these birds may prove harmless to your own? If they can get in, then so could a raccoon, or maybe an owl ... Oh ... and, you should probably contact the Department of Natural Resources, although I doubt they'll want the egg.

My ducks just started laying this month. I have some cambells, a pekin, and a black and white swedish. Two of them have been laying for a month or so now, and a third just started. The new one has laid two black eggs so far. When washed, it fades to a charcoal grey.

We planned to eat it.
