I have had it happen a few times with different species...adults, juvies and chicks. so yes they are that dumb.
on a raised pen its just as bad if not worse if a critter starts nosing around beneath thier feet. Chicks will do it too so even in the brooder when they molt to 2-3-4...6 weeks, its time to move them.
