Are we becoming a police state?

Well it's been 10 years. Something must be going on to protect us. Either that or the whole 911 thing was just a fluke and Osama was unable to rally enough support to attack us again. How hard would it be for some wackos to take over a school and blow the whole thing up like those guys in East Europe did. What was it 300 kids dead? That was very simple stuff compared to the 911 attack. Or maybe have 3 or 4 guys strap on some of those bomb vest at 3 or 4 airports during Christmas and blow themselves up in the security waiting line. Could you imagine what that would do to our economy.

I absolutely hate what they are doing in theory. As far as I can tell I haven't lost a thing since 911. Maybe in theory I've lost some privacy. In my job I now have to run a govt check on the name of every person I issue a check to. Or my company could get a 1 million dollar fine. I just can't get bent out of shape about privacy issues. I guess if I ever kill someone and have to become a fugitive I might care. Or if I was evading taxes or something. Just can't buy into the whole we're losing our liberties thing. I always get a good hearty laugh out of the we're losing our gun rights thing. Then the next posting in a different topic is about the 25 different guns they have and the 100 cases of ammo they have stashed. Yep the ole USA has some really tight gun laws by God.

As for 911. The person in charge at the time was warned a couple weeks in advance. He chose to disregard it. Then he sat for 7 minutes trying to figure it out when someone told him 3200 American civilians had just died. I agree about the inefficiency when the village idiot is in charge and doesn't do his job. Yes it happens at every level in our government. It takes something like 911 to get them on the ball. Just like it takes a severe recession for people to realize they are living beyond their means.

What has been done to secure our freedom more than any strip search, groping old women or any domestic policy is our pro-active position in the terror hot spots. Why do you think they do not want us there? We learn more about terror plots from surveillance from our military and CIA operatives heck even mercenaries help us out. We tighten our borders and they still get in, they live here awaiting activation. I am sure they interrogated Osama Bin Laden before killing him (I hope they did I cannot believe they double tapped him when they had him alive) There is so much behind the scenes work that keeps us safe that I really do not want to know about it as we all know what we are capable of. We used 2 atomic bombs to secure our freedom we knew what we were doing. Now we want to bring our troops home for election purposes and other purposes against our experienced generals advice, how dumb is that? The terror battlefield is global and one cannot fight a global battle with the troops at home and do what amounts to hope(sound familiar) they will not attack us. Instead we are more concerned about free health care free this free that and the list just goes on. Now we are so in debt as a nation I am not sure we can pay China when they come knocking, the only limiting factor that keeps China from attacking us is nuclear retaliation and the inability for them to mobilize their army. I guess I should say one thing that does happen in a police state the people are kept in the dark or behind an iron curtain or distracted by nonsensical domestic issues.

When I was recently on a connecting flight from South Korea, I didn't have to take my shoes off. In fact their airport security people were quite nice. I said, "Do I have to take my shoes off?" and she smiled and said, "No, please keep your shoes on." At LAX - that was another story. One lady was getting bent out of shape because we were only forming one line and the second line was too short. So she starts yelling and saying, "Come on - don't you see that there's another line open?!" Like she couldn't have asked nicely. And if your shoes, jackets, and personal belongings aren't in their correct places, then you better be prepared to hear a mouthful. At least that's all I got from all this "protection" after 9/11.

But don't you think the officer over reacted? What happened to restraining the lady like cops use to do before tasers? A taser is extremely dangerous.

He might as well have punched her in the face or shot her in the foot. At least he would have had less of a risk of killing her. The problem I have with tasering people who are non violent , even if they are belligerent, is that it is an over reaction. It is violence. A person does not have a right to be violent to someone just because they are yelling. What worries me is that some officers are using it as a way to solve all problems instead of talking or restraining. Laws need to see a taser as a weapon that is unacceptable to use unless life threatening situations just like a billy club and a gun.

It can kill people. It is being over used.

I suggest you be very careful in your accusations. Unless you have ever been a police officer, you have zero ground to stand on. Buck up, go through what it takes to become a police officer and only then, in the face of you being in this exact situation can you make a judgement. In case it had never occured to you, often times the "police report" that you have read or the information relayed to you by your (I'm sure) very credible news source is not a complete account of what occured.

In my case, I've seen it first hand.. felt it... Wont go there.... but I know more great and dedicated cops than the turds. The few turds out there seem to overshadow the great ones...........

Police response in my town is about 45 seconds

Yup.

Our cops care, and I have had zero problems. They are awesome, full stop, do not pass go. No complaints.

But.......... In other areas, esp. inner cities.. I see tasers used more and more often than is needed.

I have not read the entire thread, I will finish it after this post.

About the elderly lady being tasered for yelling and being aggressive, but not attacking the officer.

Let's change it to a teenager and a teacher. Does the teacher have the right to zap the kid?

Or two teenagers....would we accept this type of treatment from any other group of people?

Hmmmmm.....I've seen a few old ladies I'd like to taser.....

Can the group be nurses? I can just see it now....tasers in all the nursing homes for when the residents get a little rowdy!

I disagree with you on most of your post.

Just because they have not used the new laws on you personally does not mean the slow stripping of your rights are troubling. Often the complete loss of freedom does not happen at once. It happens slowly by chipping away at our freedoms little by little.
