I got my chickens the first of May at the age of 66. Too bad I didn't discover how charming they are long before this. They talk to me, or nag me for treats. The design of my coop allows them to stand on top of the nesting boxes and look me in the eye. Some of them love to do that and bawk at me.

My granddaughter (10) and my grandson (2) live with us and they both enjoy the chickens.

I am in the process of building some breeding pens so we can hatch some Welsummer and Ameracuana eggs in the spring. Maybe I'll mix the Ameracuana with our Faverolles to see what kind of EEs they make. I have 55 chickens now. Space is not a problem so I don't know where I will stop.

My chickens do not free range so they haven't tried to join us in the house yet. However, the goats are another story.

I absolutely love my chickens. I knew I would enjoy them, but I can't stop telling everyone how they're better pets than horses, cats or even dogs (I have several of each)!

I melt every time my little flock comes running when they see me. Or when I sit down in a chair and they take turns jumping up on my lap and taking naps. Or how each one has a distinct personality. I love feeding them treats (they are so appreciative). And they feel so nice to pet and touch. Their little flock dynamics are so interesting and few things make me grin as much as I do when I watch them dust bathe. They're like living landscaping - and I think they make our property so pretty. I spend so much more time outside now just to be with them.

And I never thought I would love a chicken! But I'm head over heels for my little Bella. She's a Dominique hen who has decided to be my friend. She follows me everywhere, gently pecks my toes until I pick her up, and knows I'll sneak her special treats because she's so dang cute. I have the sweetest picture of her sneaking bites of apple from my year old niece. She's one special chicken.

I was just signing on to post a comment on "life's simple pleasures" but I'll just tack it here! It is a beautiful autumn morning here in Virginia... trees are turning beautiful colors, the birds are singing and the dogs let me sleep an extra 30 minutes this morning! :) The best however, was letting the chickens out and watching them run out to see if I had any treats, and then walking inside the coop to find a beautiful, light brown egg - still WARM from the hen! I hatched these guys myself and seeing the "cycle" continue is just down right pleasing. It is nice to be able to appreciate the simple, natural blessings in our lives, isn't it?

We sit in the swing and watch the birds almost every night in the summer/fall. very relaxing and they do some very funny things. I got them for the bugs in the yard but kept them for the way they relax everybody, even the kids. They have taught my kids and myself about life and death, fresh food, both eggs and meat, and how to care for another living thing. In 10 years I have never felt I should not have got them. (or keep getting them:).

I agree! My chickens have been wonderful! My little bantam rooster Hamish makes me laugh out loud, he's so funny!

My chickens have also made me cry when I've lost them. I never thought I'd get so attached to a chicken but they all have individual personalities and are just SUPER pets as well as egg providers.

Our family enjoys the chickens very much. My Granson is 18 months and loves to gather eggs with papaw

Its good to know there are others out there as crazy for chickens as I have become this past year. I grew up in the city but my Dad always talked about how much he loved raising chickens when he was young. He is now 80 and in declining health, but I am so happy that he has been able to enjoy chickens, again, vicariously through me. It always gives us something to talk about.
