Are You A Brinsea Owner? - April Hatch Along - Prize: Ecoglow Brooder!

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy :

My eggs in the Brinsea are due tomorrow.

Mine too! I actually have some due tomorrow and the 16th as well. I let the first group turn for an extra day and am having the second group turn for one less day then usual. Hopefully I get some babies! I have a feeling some of the eggs that were sent to me were not all that great with fertility hence all the clears at lockdown. Bummer but hopefully what's left at least half will hatch

I put my group in lock down tonight. I don't know if they will make it since almost all of them had detached air cells. I see movement in several but when candling they don't look right. Instead of the air cell being circular it looks more like a big u shape that dips all the way down 2/3 of the egg. I have no idea how a healthy chick could fit in a shape like that. I'm using a egg carton big end up to hatch in and keeping my fingers crossed.

From my limited experience my air cells look like kind funny shaped kinda like that when I incubate them flat on their sides. Which unit are you using? GL

The Eco 20 with automatic turner. I have been incubating them large end up from day 1. This is my 7th batch and I have never seen anything like it from my others.

Hey guys/gals I have a question. 2/4 eggs have pipped in my Brinsea, one has pipped at the right end ( fat end ) and the other has pipped in the wrong end ( the pointy end )..what should I do? Why did the chick pip in the wrong end? I have never had this happen before.

Ok gotcha, are they shipped eggs by chance? That's the only other thing I can think of with wonky air cells like you described.

I had one last batch pip on the wrong end. It hatched just fine just took it a lot longer. The batch before that I had one pip and start to zip at the wrong end them completely stop. 24 hours later I couldn't take it anymore and helped it out by zipping the rest and starting to "pop the top". It's membrane had started to really dry out and was resembling paper so I doubt it would have made it out by itself. I did my best to wet the dried membrane then put it back in the bator. It ended up hatching and is a healthy chick now. I think they drying of the membrane was from humidity fluctuations from me opening the bator to pull out the already dried chicks who were playing soccer with the egg in question. Not to say you should help the chick out and assist the hatch it's just what I decided to do when the cheeping and movement completely stopped for 12+ hours. So for now sit on your hands for as long as possible, it probably will have a harder time manuevering around in the limited space but it still has a chance to hatch on it's own. Keep the humidity up, don't open the bator like I did! The baby chickies will be fine in there for up to three days. Hope this helps
