When you have chickens or other poultry, it is important to do an official coop cleaning; Clean the coop out at least every season. But, how do you know what to use when cleaning out the coop, and how do you do it? I explain everything in this helpful little article. Hope this helps!
CLEANING THE COOP
1. REMOVE ALL HAY/CEDAR CHIPS/NEWSPAPER.
Remove all of your bedding from the coop. I use bedding in my nestboxes and on my floor. If you keep bedding on the floor, I would recommend getting that out with a shovel. Just dump the nestbox bedding out onto the coop floor. *While the cleaning process is in progress, have the chickens free ranging*
2. DUMP THE POOP BOARDS
This is easy. Just dump all the poop from your poop boards.
3. ONCE ALL OF THE BEDDING IS OUT AND POOPBOARDS ARE EMPTIED...
Now, you clean it!!! But, with what? Bleach and similar products are NOT good choices, because you might not rinse the coop good enough and your chickens end up dying from it. Plus, the smell from it would probably give them colds. It's just better to use water from a hose or from buckets.
4. MAKE SURE YOU DUMP ALL OF THAT OLD BEDDING AND POOP INTO THEIR RUN.
Once you start growing crops again, the chicken poo from the bedding is good for the run because it fills the ground with good soil.
5. LET THE COOP DRY OUT
Don't use anything like towels or napkins to dry it, as that could take even longer than just letting it sit there. Let it dry naturally.
6. START FRESH WITH BRAND NEW, CLEAN BEDDING
Always add new bedding to the nestbox and floor. This is awesome for them to pick and scratch around on the floor.
*If the food or water is low or dirty, change that too. REMEMBER, NO BLEACH WHEN CLEANING OUT THE WATER!*
