Are you Prepared?

Unfortunately my meds can only be kept for a short time before they expire. I don't think there are any natural ways to manage diabetes (insulin dependent anyways), but people do live for quite awhile without insulin. It's just a very uncomfortable existence. Worse comes to worse, I figure I'll have a degree in Biology with research experience. I'd find a few pigs myself and experiment to find some insulin! (Actually, laboratory synthesis of human insulin is a very easy procedure. You just need to introduce the gene for producing insulin into a bacteria genome and they will begin to produce it)

my dh is insulin dependant as well.
Insulin does have a good shelf life if kept cold.
One can reduce the amount needed, by eating a good amount of Cinnimon with each meal.
We have experimented with it, when he has run out and the pharmecies are closed.

In Canada, they have been able to cure Tye 1 by the use of Capsicum injected to the pancreas.
They have figured out why it shuts down, and how to shock it back into working again.

Are you talking about cinnamon from a health food store or what you buy at the grocery store? I would love to try that with my DH and see if it helps him. . .he controls it pretty well with long and short acting insulin, but to have something to fall back on if something would happen, would be just short of a miracle.

Actually, we ("Mormon's") believe in having a years supply of food and 72 hour kits together. Food storage is a good idea for everyone, no matter what background you come from. You never know when you are going to need it and it's worth the piece of mind it give you to know you won't go hungry, as you found out.

I live and know that fear also. We are preppers, have been moving toward it for quite awhile, but there is always more that could be done. So far we have worked on water storage, we are fortunate to have a natural spring on our property also, eggs, chicken and beef, saving for a kitchen wood stove and cooking gear for it.

I have been thinking about those backpacks and we have two BIG Marlboro backpacks in the attic, and I was wondering what I could do with them . . .will get them out next week and start packing up stuff. DH is a smoker and he did get some great stuff from M. while they did the point thing. Their clothes were awesome, made to last!!! He has worn one of their shirts for about 10 years now and it still looks brand new!

Please don't think I was pointing a finger, I respect everyone's choice of religion . . .I just think your religion sounds very peaceful and loving. I had remembered reading that somewhere about having a surplus and thought how smart it was!

Well since mine quit from a gallstone blocking the entrance and frying the thing, somehow I dont think it will be receptive to shocking. LOL

We use the capsules.
And remember, its not a replacement, but it helps in a pinch and is a good supp to take with meals.
Diabetics have even better control, if they eat lots of real fats and take fermented cod liver oil and butter oil as well.
Dh has no more healing issues, since we left behind the modern diabetics diet, that requires low fat.

I think the 'bug out bags' and an alternative place to go, are both things that are not mentioned enough. Most of survival and preparing for the worst, is preparing mentally.

You need to have a plan for if you have to leave, a plan for travelling if you cannot get a vehicle to drive or the roads are blocked.

We are going to get a water purifier, it handles 13,000 gallons on one filter and it is small and portable. I have wanted one for a long time, it will be great for camping! We are also wanting to train our small pony for packing. That would also be great for camping and hiking.

Fuzzies that roof thing was just what I was thinking!! I remember (vaguely) reading an article about a "Green" house, and part of the set up was a cistern system so that most (if not all) lawn watering came from rain (either straight or the stored then sprinkled)... pretty cool idea for conservation, but I thought maybe it couldn't hurt for emergency stuff too. Nice to know someone else thought of it too though, means at least I'm not the only crazy one.

Gasoline wise, I wondered about that too! At hubby's work they have a tank... bigger than a back yard propane, but not gigantic. Say roughly two people long by one person tall... ish. But they have to pay out the nose for gas for it. Like $4/gallon when Shell is selling it for $2, so they try to use as little as possible. But they do use what's in there. Not enough time for it to get icky. I wonder what all size tanks they offer... and if the big truck filling is the only way... things to ponder.

All this work on solar/electric cars... they ought to be making solar powered tractors. Boy wouldn't that be awesome. You're out in the sun anyways, may as well get something besides a sunburn out of it. More things to ponder...

Ohh question... do you prepared ones only prepare just enough for yours, or do you also squirrel away for family that might show up, or neighbors, or ?? I know y'all were talking about looters and whatnot, but I mean people that you LIKE showing up at your door... do you just have just enough, and keep the door bolted. Or do you plan for people you care for to need help? Just curious.

Oh and a quick thanks to those posting, lots of great info and lots of thoughts to ponder too.

One way to stock up on gas, is everytime you fill up your car, fill a gas jug as well. Keep adding to whatever tank you have aquired for stockpiling.
