I have read in sitauitons of crisis that the government/military will take your firearms, and may even force you to leave your home.Only recent thing I read about was with Katrina aftermath. I think that is so sad that you are forced to give up everything and herded into a camp whether you like it or not.Fight it and you get shot.

But we live in a free country.......NOT.

There is something to be said for staying under the radar. Don't get noticed and nobody will bother you. And the fewer people that know you have a plan and are storing things, the better - less to come looking for your stuff when it hits the fan.

That's what cracks me up about the people on the Preppers show. Ummmmm hello buddy, now EVERYONE knows you have all this stuff. Where do you think they're gonna show up first?

Regarding the Preppers show... my thoughts EXACTLY. Only thing I can figure is that the exact location isn't given, so maybe they're not too concerned. Still, OPSEC and all that. Unfortunately, being in a neighborhood, my family can't exactly be discreet about any major preparations. I'm shocked that our neighbors haven't commented on the guard tower and machine gun nest yet.

Just read the book Survivors by Rawles about the economic collapse and the survival of the various folks in the story.Weapons and silver/gold for trade was a must. I have NO pre 1965 coins.Do banks even carry those???Do you get those at pawns? Buy gold jewlery?

I hated to read it,but I think the worst(and true) part was the corruption of many. The provisional government was corrupt, and ofcourse there were the organised roving thugs-both did what they wanted.

Besides basic food and fuel having seeds were also important.

The book was fictional, but the possibility of it seems so very real. The whole money system is quite delicate, and when one thing fails the rest falls quickly. I just hate the parts about people going *bad*.Lot of good people in the end-of the-world as we-know it books, but the bad ones make life so much harder. Without a weapon to protect your family you are really at a loss.,because you just can not barter with a person who has no interest in whether you live of die.

I like the theory of pre-65 silver better than ingots. Gold is okay for holding through a downturn, but it has lots of drawbacks for barter use. Banks don't hold those coins. You can buy them from pawn shops, but coin dealers and coin shows are the main suppliers. They'll sell you $1000 bags. IMHO gold is in a bubble, so even scrap jewelry is not worth pursuing. Better off buying booze, ammo and toilet paper if you think the collapse is coming. At least you won't take a bath if everything stays stable.
