Arizona Chickens

I came in on page 21 (March 2009) - weird - I could have sworn I've only had chickens for one year... apparently it's been 2 ??? I just flipped through some of my posts and laughed at myself. What a NOOB!! I sounded like a chicken-idiot. Too funny.

And then you wanted to hatch an emu egg... left field, my friend. WAY left field.

The chicks love their new home. Since they outgrew the small dog crate I had them in, I used the dog playpen fencing we used when our little dog was a puppy. I unfolded a large box and attached it so it folded up the sides a ways (to help keep the wood chips in the crate). I use a piece of chicken wire fence for the top and set the whole thing on an old door. They don't need a light anymore since it's warmer now. They love the open space and run up and down, flying up to the roosting stick, and jostling with each other. I use a gerble water feeder which I got at Walmart for a few bucks, and that works fabulously. No mess. No dirty water. I got a small bird feeder and cut off the perch around the base of it. I used to have it set on the ground but the chicks would scratch at the feed and wasted a great deal. Then my husband used a wire to elevate it off the ground and now I have almost no waste or feed mess. I try to handle the chicks at lease a couple times a days and now 2 of them come running to the door whenever I open it and get right up on my hand. Another one is coming around slowly, but the fourth one is more independent and has to be caught. We all can't believe how fun it is to have little chicks, watching them grow, watching their behaviors, and petting them. It's such a rewarding experience.

My better half is whining because I still have two Trader Joes chicks (2 weeks old) in the bathtub. "I did not build this house for chickens...

..That was like my hubby when the PO called this morning to tell him "your live embryos have arrived".. At first he had a weird look on his face, then said "what are we going to do with all these chicks".. my reply "

My Delawares arrived this morning safe and packaged well all the way from Kansas. The bator will be here at noon via UPS, can't wait to start hatching...

Any first timer tips??

Additionally, has anyone ever used any company other than USPS for shipping? For what some people are asking for shipping via USPS priority I can get two day Fedex for $2.00 cheaper.... Our PO box office is a nightmare...
