Arizona Chickens

Quote:
I just started gardening this year. trying to grow veggies. Arizona can get at least two harvests on some thing. Have been busy at digging up earth to put stuff in for Sept. Did get brave and shaded an area to grow lettuce and kale this summer. IT came up okay but looks a little week. Heard that fruit trees are due in the end of the mo. want to put in a few of those.
would love to learn more and look forward to a garden forum like the chicken forum... thanks.

I too started growing veggies this year but i guess if i want anything other than peppers im going to have to put a little more work into it and take it a little more seriously. i ended up with horrible results... my radishes were dime sized, zucchini was the size of my thumb, and the pumpkins died when the got to the size of a baseball the squash never produced the tomato burnt up and then my wonderful avocado tree couldnt take the heat and shriveled up into a twig .. im so mad

but ill give it another shot this year but i dont have much room to grow cause i live right in the middle of the city .. right off 43rd, so obviously i dont have much land and with a pool and room for my chickens i dont have much yard left

.. ive been squeezing every squarefoot out of it this fall for my plants so hopefully we'll get some results

and if nothing works this fall ill be building a greenhouse

.. im already looking for supplies so if you find anything on CL make sure you let me know

they seem to have figured out the pooping thing just fine. They'll be leaving on Sunday, so I am not worried about it.

Edited: How do you candle 227 quail eggs? I tried...with a pen maglight, but decided it would result in too many dropped eggs.

Good morning Arizona! So Sweet to get a little cooler weather, below 100 is always nice and 68-70 early in the morning is a treat. I can set out side, have my coffee and watch my little flock do their morning running, scratching and a picking away.

I am looking for two cochin pullets. I just need two more to complete my little family, I live in the west valley. If anyone has some, or where I can find them?

I have been using the pine shavings for about three weeks now. I am so happy with it. I use it in the pen as well as the nesting boxes. My pen smells so much better. Clean up is a snap. Best of all my chickens seem to love it. I wish I had known about it when I first got my flock.

And Good Morning to you! I think 2 of the members here had Cochin pullets for sale, check CL F&G section.... Are you using the "chip" pine shavings, the bigger pieces? I cant find anything but really small, pine "dust"....Glad you like using the shavings, I'll switching as soon as I find the bigger chips...

I found the chips at the feed store 2 different size chips one was $6.00 for the bigger chips. I got that one and the other was $7.00 a bale for smaller size. The man at the feed store said the larger was better and cheaper. The bales are compressed in plastic. I could get two or three bales in the trunk of my car. When the bales are opened you will be amazed at how much is in there. I called around to see who had it and how much. In Buckeye on MC-85 wanted $9.00 for same size bale and only one size. Triple D Feed Store on 821 Jack Rabbit Trail, south of I-10 Buckeye. Good Luck, You will love it.

Enjaytoo, Thank you for the CL F&G section tip. I did check it out, however I did not find any. I would take 2 silkies, if I can't find what I am looking for.

I hope everyone has a great day, God gave us another to use as we will. What I will do with mine today? I'll ponder that while I sip my coffee.

Those baby Quail are so cute. They look like little balls running around. I am amazed at how high they can jump/fly. I love the little house. What will you do with them? When I lived in Mesa, a Quail layed her eggs in one of my hanging flower pots. The eggs all hatched, there were 10. My cat found them, and ate 3. I called Fish and Game. They gave me the number of a lady who rescues Quail and when they are old enough she turns them back out to the desert. I just took them in a cat carrier. She had different cages for different kinds.

Quail are very good eating. Lots of folks raise them for meat birds.

I love to set out in my yard and watch the quail with their babies running around. Watching them, in there family life, is almost the same as my chickens. The Roos taking care of the girls, calling to each other. Oh, the free things that God gives us. We just have to look around I am so thankful.

Has anyone been to the Zoo to see the baby white Tigers?

No on the tigers, but that sounds like a good thing to do with the boys now that it is cooling down.

I sold the quail to the guy I bought the eggs from (we had a deal he would buy any hatch survivors back). We aren't set up for quail yet, and if I were to raise them it would be for meat.

A NOVEL, By LareePQG
I did some heavy duty research into City of Phoenix municipal code to determine what I could and couldn't do (with quail and chickens)...and got a lot of nowhere. I have experience in contract law, and got the distinct impression the city is being purposely vague.

Problem: we are on horse property built in 1950. Supposedly we are exempt from most things because it is either 1) written into the orignial property deeds or 2) grandfathered in. Most of my neighbors have livestock, poultry, and other "farmy" things. I cannot find proof of what seems to be an urban legend

Here's my tissue issue--
---COP defines animals as "any animal of a species that is susceptible to rabies, except man. "--so not chickens
---COP defines livestock as "neat animals, horses, sheep, goats, swine, mules and asses."--so not chickens
---There is no definition for "poultry".
---Because of plot size, I can slaughter my own livestock. Nothing written on culling of poultry.
---Residents are limited to 20 head of poultry or 25 rats (total) per half-acre.
---You can't give away chicks or ducklings as prizes, and you can't dye them.
---If your lot size is less than 10,000 sq feet, you need written, certified permission from all your neighbors.
---All coops & runs must be at least 80 feet away from a residence, otherwise you need written permission.

and my favorite:
---"No male poultry shall be kept within the City limits except such male poultry as are incapable of making vocal noises which disturb the peace, comfort or health of any person residing within the City."

I have called the city a few times, probing for info, and basically the noise ordinance supercedes all other ordinances. So even if your HOA, property deeds, or lot size allows for roosters, they have to be mute.

Yet all my neighbors have multiple roosters, and coops closer than 80 feet to mine or other neighbor's houses. But I CANNOT FIND ANYTHING in zoning law or property deeds which would "grandfather" us in.

I only really care about being within the letter of the law because my one neighbor (who has 2 or 3 roosters) is out to get us. She'll stand on her roof and take pictures if I am making too much noise in the garden. She reports EVERYBODY to COP for vegetation/cars/whatever.

If the neighborhood has been "getting away" with ignoring city ordinances, I don't want her to report me for doing something odd, and thenit be ruined for everyone.
