Arizona Chickens

Disclaimer: This is NOTHING like losing chicks, having hens stolen, slicing open the sensitive place between my toes (blwahhaaaahh), spending 2 days at the ER trying to get a broken knee fixed (double blwahhaaaahh), or any other real problems I missed here while trying to catch up. My sincere condolences to you all

My little problem (I'm whinging):
One of my very productive redworm colonies is toast, or more correctly, baked, or braised, or steamed.

WAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! I moved them off of the porch for the mother visit so she could relax on the porch. I put them on the east side of the house, where I thought they were ok. They were ok on Saturday and Sunday! Last night I dumped out the entire bin and neither I nor the NHR found a vigorous worm. As Mclevinson would say (and I am incorporating into my phrase vocabulary), "SHUCKS AND WHAZOO!!!"

If you go to this site and look at the different breeds under hardiness, you can find breeds that are supposed to be heat or cold tolerant.

Our hens are still young, and we are new to this too

From what I've read it seems open air coops are the way to go, and added shade is good, but the air flow is really important too.
Ours is an open air coop and we are planning on either putting a roll up shade on the fence, and then pulling it across the run over the coop in the summer. Or we might do a roll down shade from the roof, haven't decided yet!

Thanks for the link...I will check it out!

Hi Jen! My 3yo loves black chickens the best. We got a cuckoo marans for her, and we love the super dark brown eggs. They are so pretty next to the blues and greens. Our coops are just open air pens with a few "lean to's" to give shelter from wind and rain. It works pretty well. When it is super hot, I go out and spray down the coops. It seems to help.

Thank you! My coop is an open air coop as well with a small lean to on one end. I sprayed it down the other day when it was so hot...my girls are out there panting! Bought a fan the other day too. I will check out the cuckoo marans...seems like there are lots of people that like them!

Have fun, they grow as fast that first 6 weeks you will hardly believe it! I had 6 easter eggers but 3 turned out to be roosters.

Now I just have my three ladies and I am patiently waiting for May/June when the first eggs should be arriving! Can't wait! Good luck!
Jen too
