We never boiled or cleaned a gopher trap. Most gopher holes are just dirt exit piles where they push up the dirt they have excavated.
We always set two traps, one in each tunnel. Sometimes there would be three tunnels. Anyway, we would put one trap in each tunnel, cover the hole with a tin can, and then cover that with dirt to make it light tight.
The traps have to be on a chain connected to a pretty sturdy stake. Stake it down pretty good, because you don't want a dog or coyote to steal the trap with your dead gopher.
When excavating the tunnels use an old kitchen spoon. Never put your hand in a gopher hole. It hurts really bad when they bite, and they bite right through the finger nail. A lesson learned the hard way.
