Arizona Chickens

We never boiled or cleaned a gopher trap. Most gopher holes are just dirt exit piles where they push up the dirt they have excavated.

We always set two traps, one in each tunnel. Sometimes there would be three tunnels. Anyway, we would put one trap in each tunnel, cover the hole with a tin can, and then cover that with dirt to make it light tight.

The traps have to be on a chain connected to a pretty sturdy stake. Stake it down pretty good, because you don't want a dog or coyote to steal the trap with your dead gopher.

When excavating the tunnels use an old kitchen spoon. Never put your hand in a gopher hole. It hurts really bad when they bite, and they bite right through the finger nail. A lesson learned the hard way.

Happy Trapping

Sorry you are having critter problems. Hope you get what ever it is. Some thing was after my chickens this morning. My dogs were going crazy. I could hear the coyotes pretty close. I thought I had seen different scat around my pen area. I have a hound dog that eats everything nasty that she find outside. Some times It is hard to tell. Fox, have been in my yard before I got chickens. I am sure they have been back hunting this area.

Hope your DH gets better real fast, so that you can enjoy the time together to the fullest.

Random Thoughts this morning:

Last night I took the munchkins to the high school to run/ride around the "race track". Of course all the power, AC, water for the school is right next to the football stadium---and it is all secured under diamond-weave mesh.

So we walk by the water meter---which is HUGE and contained in a 10' by 12' walk-in mesh box. The 3-year-old says,

"Mommy, is that a chicken house?"

"I could be. It is a pre-fab chicken house." He stops his scooter, puts his finger on his chin, and looks off to the left, thinking.

"I like it. We should take it home for Nuggett."

I just think it was too hot so they've all held off.

I do have some photos of the playhouse. Work in progress.

One of my girls checking it out.

It has two windows, fold down table, that I screwed a basket for a nest on it. The nest can be used with the table up or down. I put a roost pole across the front portion. Easy clean up. There is enough room for a feeder and water under the table. This will help keeping poo out of either one. This is a crazy thing. 2 years ago I found 1/2 of a playhouse roof in my wash after a hard rain. I, the junk picker that I am, kept it. Just so happens, it is the same roof that is on the new house. One side of the new roof is bowed some what from the lady's kids setting on top of it. the old one is not. Woot! Woot! I shall change that out and still keep the new one. I will find a use for it.
