Arizona Chickens

How are you making the waterer? Photos?

Bucket, pvc, nipples. I promise I will search for my camera-to-computer cord today. My biggest challenge is placement, and obtaining height cheaply. I was going to use bricks but the darn things surpass 50 cents apiece. I need it to look a little nice, ya know? DH hates the whole chicken thing. Gonna make a natural sausage and cheese frittata with fresh homegrown herbs for dinner tonight and see if I can remind him about how very amazing fresh eggs are. He has to work late so maybe he'll be up for it.

Oh, and can you join us for coffee Saturday?

Next Saturday? What time and where? I'll mark the calendar now. Following Saturday is a lawn show in Tucson that I plant to go to; even got dh to agree to go with me. Now I have to decide which birds to enter...

You've made an excellent beginning!

Looking forward to the lesson in chicken math. Just remember, it is a geometric, not an arithemetic progression. Oh, and birds that are not yet laying or crowing are NEVER figured into the total, not matter the amount of space they require or amount of feed they consume. (Well, I remember hearing of one case where someone ordered a thousand day old chicks, but that was a significant aberration!)

I don't know where you are in Tempe, can you come to Detour Coffee on the NW Corner or Cooper & Elliott? Just North of Marketside. Mom & Pop place, would like to support. They do their own fresh baking too!
Any other takers? C'mon peeps, fresh baked goods, coffee and chicken talk...what's not to love?

I just figure is it Quantum Physics, who could expect me to control that?

What's a lawn show? Maybe I should beg DH to let me go?

On a completely different subject: THE HEAT

So last year I put a little 7" personal fan out in the coop, much to the electric bill's dismay. BUT, I stopped having losses from heat stroke, and the chickens would all chill out under the fan.

This year I wanted a solar fan, to save the $, but they are ~$250 for a decent one!!!

Anywhoo, I was doing research on the little greenhouse fans and apparently ordered one, because I TOTALLY don't remember ordering it.

It came today, and actually is pretty sweet!

If you had a large-large doghouse, this fan would make it a wind tunnel. I hung it upside-down under the chicken ladder to prevent roosting and poopage. I think 10-12 chickens can safely sit under it, enjoying a breeze.

Dar- One fan at the end of your skateboard coop would make things much more comfortable in the hot-hot heat.

I stuck my finger in it, and it only hurt a 3 on a scale of 10...with no skin breakage.

ANywhoo, I will let you all know how long it runs. I would bet it will last at least a season. I am also going to run my old fan on the usage meter, to see what the cost savings will be.

I can make that--maybe around 9?
