Arizona Chickens

HI guys,

Well we finally got a rooster. How fun to watch him guard and lead those hens with such authority He is a Buff Orph...He must have a gentle hand cause those hens follow him around and treat him like one of the girls...He does have his favorites though, he seems to like the blonds... Anyway, on of my Delawares wanted to sit so I just picked out 9 random eggs (trying to catch a blond lay one) then I stuffed them under her........I hope I get some chicks. she was sitting when he came so I did not think she was fertile. We have her in a separated area with water and feed...Such a mother always on the nest. Hope it works, I am done with taking care of baby chicks...let the hen do it, right?

I could help supervise on Wed/Thur/Friday/Saturday, not like I live far away! The other days would be too hard since I do 12 hour shifts.

You are a treasure, and I'll return the favor anytime!

We can be vacation buddies

Hey Meg...... anybody getting together for coffee on Saturday? Haven't heard anything this week yet and you seemed to be our organizer. Anybody free?

Paint, paint, paint has been the order of the past two days. I need a wee bit more lumber and some roof flashing to finish the structural stuff on the coop. In the meantime, I got a coat of paint on the lumber of the run yesterday and the second coat today. I also hung the front door on the henhouse and put hardware cloth on it. Just gotta get a couple of 2x3's and I can hang the back doors. After that the only lumber I'll need is for trimming the henhouse up so it looks nice. Gotta build the egg boxes and the chicken door as well. But once I put the roof flashing and the hardware cloth on the east side of the henhouse, I can start wrapping the run in wire. I have pics and I'll post 'em as soon as I can dig up my card reader.

We had all six birds out in the yard for a while this evening so they could peck around. The three in the tractor enjoyed the space, but the three in the brooder love chasing the ants. We have stray cats that come into the yard, and one of them decided to stalk the birds. Cinnamon (the Ameracuna) decided that she wasn't gonna be having any of that, and charged the cat, wings flapping and clucking like crazy, sending the cat into a panicked retreat.

After a while, her, Buffy (the Buff Orpington,) and Domino (the Buff Wyandotte) started hanging out in the new run and they seemed to like the spot. Then Cinnamon hopped into the henhouse, and even perched on the roost bar for a while. I think they're gonna like the new digs.

I'll have to see how bad work kicks my butt tomorrow. I got off on sunday so DH could go to the bball game. So had to pick up tomorrow. Ick!!!

Meg, I wish everyone who did a test hatch for me would keep track of it like that.

I'm worried that marans roos are too young... time will tell, I've seen them get jiggy with the pullets but....

Nurseshelly gets the next 18,

So skacres can get the following 18.

My 3 pasofino eggs that hatched were all pullets and every single one was clean faced... very disappointed. I'll be selling them as blue laying EEs
