Arizona Chickens

had to cancel the order I had made today for some rare and exotic breeds. Looks like I'll be downsizing again.

My roos been dead for two weeks and the neighbor called to complain about the crowing rooster. My wife told him she didn't know where it was but that it wasn't on our property.

I'm just about done.......

This is one of the most active groups that I have found, and I'm glad it's my old home state..
One day, Good Lord willing, I'll move back to the central Arizona area..
Which brings me to my question.. Since so many of you seem to have problems with people complaining
about your chicks, Why don't you get together and take positive action instead of negative reaction.?..
My suggestion is to organize the entire Arizona chicken owners and get one of your state senators to
introduce a bill making it a state law that anyone can have chickens in their home, and have it over rule
HOAs as well..There would be a LOT of compromising, but in these difficult economic times, how can you justify
denying a family the right to suppliment their food supply.?.. There is even a precedent, as has been so often
quoted on BYC..
This could be a very important step in a nation wide campaign, and could garner a lot of national support.. It
could help spur a return to more sensible regulations, and help boost the back to the land movement..
Just a thought... Will...

Will, I agree.

Mahonri, that stinks. Maybe you could buy that house and rent it out?

aurorarose25, I think that's a great idea. I've been wanting to find a group of like-minded people here in Tucson to trade with. Seems like a win-win for everyone.

Mikey, I'm a pellet guy, but I like the looks of that feed. If I were in Phoenix, I'd try that.

AuroraRose - Do you already have a pond to raise the tilapia and prawns? I work with a company that seals man-made ponds using amended soil rather than plastic liners - designed to be permanent. Maybe we could work out some sort of exchange - pond help for some of the fish, etc.!

Sorry. I forgot to click "Quote" so this would be part of AuroraRose's post! It's been awhile.....

Not a finished pond, but that would be awesome.. maybe work out some things with the prawns as well if you like.. if you have pics of what the ponds look like send me a pm..

Cotton hatched another egg last night and left the new chick to get chilled when she took the others off to eat and mingle with the other chickens. I found the chick [I thought] dead but on the way to the garbage pail I felt a flicker of life so I took the chick in and cupped it in my hands and kept blowing warm breath air on it. The chick slowly came back. I help her for 3 hours and she was peeping away! I have the brooding box warmed up and she is doing all right so far. I even brought the other two eggs in just in case I was lucky enough to have them hatch. They are ready to hatch but not sure if they got to chilled or not. Those eggs will be doomed either way so giving them a chance. I have them under the lamp also. OHHH if I only had a bator! . I will name it either Shamrock [if roo] or Clover [as in 4 leaf clover, if hen] One lucky chick! I hope she doesn't get nuemonia! Hey I hear a lusty chipping coming from my room! Yea!

I will send pictures soon as I can figure out how to load AGAIN!!! I hate this new systum!

Wow. Where to start? I used to live in coastal Washington and went to a couple of BYC gatherings there. We had a pretty large flock of assorted chickens, ducks and pheasants. Also three of the sweetest goats you ever saw!
My Cuckoo Maran were my favorites. They were from great bloodlines and gave us some of the greatest dark eggs. Fast forward to now. I'm now in Tucson. No room for chickens :-( . BUT, I have a co-worker in Marana who has a nice flock of mix breeds. We have decided to go in together on raising some larger meat breeds (no Cornish X's). And I can have some Maran there for eggs!! I'm so excited. I've also decided that, after my lease is out in July, I'm going to start looking for a place on an acre around Picture Rocks or further south. Then I'm getting goats again.
I'd like to hatch the Maran chicks myself so I'm doing research now, bringing myself up to date on the Maran world.
So good to see so many chicken people here.
Sherrie

Welcome to BYC Arizona, Sherrie!!!! I'm glad you can enjoy your Marana Marans! <<<best attempt at a bad joke after thinking about it way too long.

New from Chandler. I was told in a previous post that I should join this thread. I'm glad I did. I have 2 Americaunas, a Light Brahma and a Buff Brahma. All just turned 4 weeks old yesterday. They are living in my garage in a tote with a heat lamp. I am in the process of painting and getting the coop ready to put them in in the next 2-3 weeks.

Welcome In2Ice!

I assume this is your first poultry project? Mine was bantam Brahmas, and it was a great first breed. Are yours all females, or do you know?

See you around!

Just a quick introduction. My name is Selina. I live in far east Mesa. I have been reading this thread for the last few weeks. I am really excited to start my chicken adventure. I just joined the BYC today https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/620256/new-member-from-mesa-az I purchased chicks from the feed store in AJ. I really wanted some white egg layers but they didn't have any. I've been looking on craigslist to try and find some but no luck there either. I would like to get a couple more chicks before these chicks get too big. Right now they are 11 days old and very cute. We are going to name them after chicken recipes, however they are going to be egg layers not food (for a while). I can't tell the difference between the reds. I think I have one Ameraucana, which I am naming Parmesan. The others will have names like nugget, noodle soup, pot pie, ala king, taco....etc. I may not post much as I know very little. Everything I know, I've learned here or elsewhere on the net. I am looking forward to being a part of this group. If you have suggestions on where to go to pick up two white egg layers, I'd appreciate it. I'd rather pick one up than order, however I'll do what it takes if you have suggestions.

Thanks,
Selina

I name my roos, drakes, and toms (only one of each at a time), but not the hens (with few exceptions). I like to say that while individuals come and go, the flock is eternal. (Maybe I can give them Borg designations like Seven of Nine?)

You may not have a huge amount of knowledge and experience, but you have something no-one else has: your perspective. So if you're not posting answers, ask your questions! Don't be a shrinking violet!

Haha!

We know when you've been sleeping. We know when you're awake. We know when you post and lurk, so don't lurk for goodness sakes!

Well that was easier then I thought it would be.

Ahhhh....look at the fuzzy little toes!! OK running back to my guest room for aversion therapy.

Mikey feed looks great. This evening I am going to ask a couple of questions on face-book and get my order together. Just need to find out if we get a days notice before the truck shows up and what happens if I am late. I will have a pretty good drive and a little planning would help me get out of the house sooner.

OK questions. I let my flocks out to mingle today and this bird shows up. Is it a Hawk??
Sorry for the poor pic quality, sun was too bright to see what I was doing.

I chased everyone into coops. When I did a head count my main roo is penned with the Lav ams and this silly little 12 week old cockerel is trying to mate with all my layers.
