Arizona Chickens

I'm "thinking" about getting a Black Jersey Giant at The Feed Barn myself... can't beat the price... and I need shavings and DE and some game bird layer so maybe I'll head out there tomorrow afternoon.

I can't believe how many roos I hatched out over New Years and Ground Hog's Day.

I hope I get more pullets for my Easter Hatch.

I may take some roos out to the Stock Shop or to Pratts too.

I picked up my Blue Jersey Giant last night. She's quit skiddish I've got her in my arms right now. Trying to let her know we are nice and she doesn't need to be scared. I'm feeding her an apple. She's a little unsure of it and me :)

Where is the Feed Barn? It's not the same as Mesa Feed Barn, is it? Also, jersey giants and brahmas are super big, right? Are they ok with regular sized hens? I'd like either one but I'm not sure I have the room.:/

novaleigh- wow you got chicken math fast!! Congrats. I hated ducks with a passion... they are so dirty, but when they became the only ones that were paying rent my opinion of them changed fast. I have to mallards and they lay wether its hot or cold, dark or light!

I captured some images this morning that I wanted to share. This is Cacciatore and my youngest daughter enjoying the morning sun. This girl doesn't get along with any of our others in the flock. She picks on all of them. Not quite sure what to do about it. She is a pretty girl. Her eggs are really pretty light olive green too. The new girl (Blue Jersey Giant) gets along with all the chicks, including the ones hatched 1/25.

From what I've read about the Jersey Giants is the are very social and get along great with the entire flock. They are also suppose to be very friendly. They grow slow and aren't that great of egg layers but IMO big us beautiful and it's earn it's keep being eye candy )

Also, the 7 month old I picked up last night is the same size, maybe a tad bigger than my easter egger.

Thanks for the info! They are so pretty. Is yours full grown at 7 months?

So my husband was a little less than happy with me last night when I showed up with another chicken. Apparently he didn't read the craigslist ad I sent him well and he failed to notice the picture of the chickens. The ad said "Jersey Giants $20" he for some reason thought that it was "New York Giants Jersey" when he agreed to let me buy them.

When I went to pick out a new girl (Jersey Giant) the couple asked me what I was going to name her. I explained that she'd be named after a chicken dish and it'd take a little while to figure out. I started to explain that the ones I currently have are named Enchilada and Taco and the woman piped in "You're on backyardchickens".....LOL I am famous ... J/K Very nice couple that is raising Jersey Giants and a few other pretty birds.

I am thinking Paprikash for our new girl. Region Hungry (apparently these birds eat a lot). Fitting?
