Arizona Chickens

Quote:

I should try to catch and haul my (or rather my neighbor's daughter's) "chicken that crossed the road" white rock over to the pen where my exhibition white rock cockerel is and take a photo. FWIW, the exhibition white rocks are as much larger than the exhibition barred rocks as the exhibition barred rocks are larger than hatchery barreds.

Well that was a minor disaster.

I took some scrambled eggs (& bacon) out for the chickies.

I fed the big girls first (Like you do with a dog & puppies)

Then I took some into the grow out pen for the little ones.

My silly temporary set up necessitates pulling the wire back and kneeling down to reach the peepers.

The big girls were outside the coop watching (and drooling, ever seen a chicken drool?) the little ones play keep-away.

Whilst the wee ones were playing keep-away and running through my legs (into the coop proper) to stay away from their brethren, the big girls figured out that they could actually get inside the coop and get closer to the scrambled eggs.

Now I have 7 big ones in the coop/run with me and 3-4-5 escaped peepers playing keep-away/try-not-to-get-pecked-by-the-huge-chickens!

Every time I finally get one a hold of a peeper and put it in the pen, 2 more get out & one of the older girls get into the pen.

Fifteen minutes of Mikey running around like...

...well, you know.

DEFINTELY not the same. The Feed Barn is just off I-17, a bit south of Deer Valley. 2428 W. Lone Cactus Dr. (623) 582-1147 FWIW, I get my feed there--a LOT of places closer, but The Feed Barn carries a better brand of feed, it is almost always in stock and very fresh; they are very nice people.
Thank you! That is quite a ways from me. I'm afraid if I go there, they'll have chicks, and I won't be able to resist! I'm holding out for a couple from MAHONRI, and then the Seramas from NURSESHELLY, if everything goes well. We're not making much progress on the new coop. Poor DH has been so busy, he just hasn't had time to work on it.

Those white rocks at the show took up all of the full height (30"? 36"?) of the cages they occupied. They were the size of turkeys, big turkeys!

P.S.

Question: what do you click (I tried multi and quote) to put all of the other quotes in with the quote you are replying to?

So that's why those roosters at the poultry show were so HUGE. DH and I have never seen such large roosters. DH wanted one. he also liked the ones in the back that had long tail feathers and red feathers...they were really shiny... Can't remember what they were.

Over in the back of the breezeway, or in the back of the regular building? The ones in the breezeway in drop pens were mostly American Games, with a few other exotic game breeds. If you mean the regular bulding, it could have been a number of different breeds. Phoenix have pretty long tails, sumatra and yokohama also, even leghorns tend towards long tails. We didn't have any of the really longtail breeds like onigadori or ohiki or totenko or... http://www.longtail-fowl.com/index.html

To bad the control tower didn't have the camera rolling on that. Sounds HYSTERICAL.
