Arizona Chickens

Well gang I got peepers! By this morning I have 5 hatched and looks like 3 more breaking out. So far out of the 14 from Aurorarose. One is a mystery! It had a hard time getting out of the egg, I noticed that the membrain was a bit heavy so I gentle help and the chick is alright so far BUT it was hatched with a big lump on the head! Aurorarose did you give me a mini emu?

Here is a picture of this chick. I will send a picture of the other peepers when they are fluffy and ready for pictures.

I had a really busy day today. This morning, I got up early and headed out to 'Market on the Move', and came home with a ton of veggies. I spent about three hours snapping green beans, chopping, and stewing tomatoes, and then I cleaned the chicken coop.

I started going to Market on the Move recently, and would highly recommend it to any Phoenix or Tucson area peeps. The group that runs it gets produce from distributors that are about to chuck it out because it needs to be eaten now, and not in a week or so, pick over it and remove all of the spoiled food, and on Saturdays (and the occasional Friday and Sunday) set up in a parking lot where its sold for really cheap. And by really cheap, I mean that ten bucks gets you sixty pounds of veggies, and for a hundred bucks you can buy a membership that lets you get veggies for a whole year. The only downside is that its total luck of the draw as far as what you get, but its all in season and good quality. So, if you don't mind waiting in line, and you can use a whole bunch of veggies, or can split an order with a friend or neighbor, its worth checking out. The website is:

Somehow I missed this the first time around.

Next one local to us is:

Saturday, March 10, 2012 08:00am - 12:00pm
Desert Palms Church (4265 S. Arizona , Chandler, AZ 85248)

And I believe we're going to check it out next Saturday

I went back to Ace Hardware yesterday just to look at all the chicks. They said they were completely out of EEs. I looked, and low and behold, there was one left! So I grabbed it and said, I would like this one please (someone else was eyeballing it). So, yet another chick is added to the mix. I told my husband about it, he just shook his head. But I got him an Anna apple tree for him from Home Depot for 20.00 so that made him happy enough to not care about yet another chick, LOL!

Nice score on the chick and the tree! you probably already know but you will need a pollinator for the Anna. Golden Dorsette is a good one with low chill hours.
