Arizona Chickens

So, I have been working feverishly to get my coop finished, and as of today it's fully enclosed. How soon is too soon to put little ones out in their brand new house? They are quite cramped in the brooder and don't seem to need the heat lamp too much anymore, even though they're still quite young.

I put ours in the coop at 6 weeks old,. Then our brooder that had the 4 week olds had an accident and wasn't safe any longer so I cautiously moved them into the coop. They are 6 weeks old and scared of the other birds but they run fast. Not too much fighting, they know when to run.

I have a mystery...I marked all FOUR eggs under the broody yesterday. Today, I counted, still four, but one was not marked and I couldn't locate the cracked one. Maybe Laree's Yoda egg used the force and replaced the cracked egg with a new one. That's my guess anyhow.

azchickens- that is weird. on a sad note I lost 3 of the 6 chicks my class hatched out from aurora rose today. they were fine one minute and dead the next. is that a silkie thing or something else. all the other chicks are fine. the water is clean and so is the brooder and they are on medicated feed. any ideas. I have one more that is wobbley, but the others just flat fell down and died! Like fine walking, scratch for food, and dead the next.

I went to the "Produce with a Purpose" in Gilbert. Looks a lot like the stuff Mikey got. They said I could only take a few tomatoes after telling me to take as much as I wanted of anything. In all fairness if they state 60# for $10 they should honor that. So I spoke with a woman 'working' on a box of tomatoes, sorting out the bad ones. See one line was letting people take a case or two and the line I went through literally was freaking out with me taking 10 tomatoes. So the lady asked me what I was going to do with the tomatoes. I told her I planned to cook spaghetti sauce and dice some and freeze to use later. She showed me the tomatoes they'd pulled to throw out. They weren't rotten, just a black top that could easily be cut off. So, she gave me two garbage bags and a garbage back of bell peppers to trim up and freeze. I trimmed up one bag of tomatoes, made a pot of spaghetti sauce, gave the chickens the tops I trimmed off and the ones that were smooshed. They devoured them in a hurry. The girls love tomatoes. . Here was my load.

I got a chance to catch and hold my girls this weekend. The Blue Jersey Giant is Paparikash and the EE is Cacciatore. They are my only two laying eggs until June or July when the others should start laying (fingers crossed)

Very strange. Could they be buried somewhere? My EE buries her eggs on occation.

Well my backyard seems a whole lot quieter now.

I have no idea that is weird! Sorry to hear that.

Mikey-Sorry about that, I missed that she wanted to leave the hens. Scratch that plan.

Kev: It was nice to meet you, and I'm glad I could help with the rooster. Let me know how he tastes :D
