Arizona Chickens

OOPS After the results from google came back, I realized searching for images for "Adult Sex Links" on my work computer was probably not a wise idea. So, with that said. I have two pullets hatch 1/4/2012 (10 weeks old) one is orange and the other is Red for sure, neither have white. I would like to see what adult Sexlinks look like and try to figure out the breeds. Nugget was suppose to be a RIR and Fingers was suppose to be a BO, per the feed store. As chicks they were identified on BYC as sexlinks. I purchased them from Superstition Feed (not knowing the history).

I am also starting to worry that the pullet that has always been the head hen of this group is not a hen at all. 10 weeks and she has the reddest face of them all. The EE also has a much pointier tail then that rest. Oh, please don't turn out to be roos. This batch of 8 was suppose to be 99% hens, 3 turned out to be roos already. These 5 developed at the same speed, except the redding that Enchilada is doing, her butt is showing in this picture.

Oh yes, and the wannabe chicken wanted her picture taken too

They all look like pullets to me except the furry one on the very bottom. I don't think she'll ever lay an egg but her smile makes up for it.

EEs tend to have that kind of tail and the barred rock you are worried about being a roo has the coloring of a hen.
As far as sex-links go... I've had 4. 2 had white and 2 looked exactly like my production reds.
Basically the production reds and red sex-links are all just mixed red hens that lay a lot of eggs. The only thing the "sex-link" part is good for is telling the sex at hatch and that doesn't even work all of the time. I ended up with a sex-link roo that was supposed to be a pullet. Ideal hatchery has great descriptions of which breeds are used for each of their sex-links and what they should look like. If Superstition feed got the chicks from Ideal, you can check there if you are still curious.

I've been very busy lately but I've been keeping up (barely).
News here is that 3 of my 5 pullets(the red ones) are now laying and the other two (austrolorps) are squatting. My BSL hen, Opal, has been picking on my PR pullet, Cherry, and made a hole in the back of her head so I've been treating that. I might have to give the BSL to my sister if she gets worse, but I worry coyotes might get her there. She's so used to free-ranging a large yard she may venture out of the safe zone. I guess I could try isolating her here first.
My GSL pullet is already laying full sized eggs which makes it hard to tell her eggs apart from the hens'. I think she missed the memo that she could take it easy for awhile and lay pullet bullets. Oh well, she must be an over-achiever.
My other PR pullet, Tonks, has been going to the top of the wall and then calling for me to get her down. She goes up by way of a tree limb and then can't jump all the way down. I'm hoping she doesn't go down the other side some time, but so far she just calls for help. It's pretty funny.

Thank you, Gallo.

(BTW -- I am hitting 'reply' to the individual messages, but it seems to be placing all replies to the very end of the entire listing. )
Still new to this format. -- I am more used to Facebook, I guess.
Thanks for being patient w/me.

Thank you to EVERYONE who took the time to send kind words and hugs my way.
It has been a VERY rough 24 hours. I am trying to learn to NOT beat myself up, but do not have that skill yet.
I am glad everyone likes the avatar. Cuddles was such a great kitty!
I swear that she thought she was one of my hens.

Thank you again!!!!
Replies always go at the end; always have.

Yes, I think the very bottom one might brood-sit since she won't be able to lay her own ) Thanks for the info. So they both look to be productions of some mix. GRRR....those people at the feed store. Even so, I still love my girls.

Fuzzybird: I liked your joke, and the pups are super cute. My mom is thinking of getting a standard poodle, but she wants black.

Laree: I hope you find your camera soon. I want to see pics of baby ducks! (and because it sucks to loose a camera)

Mikey: I like the tractor idea, but I don't see any support for the front of the coop and that cross beam in the large door looks like it could be a big headache, literally. How are your chicks' eyes?

Aznewmom: I am sorry to hear about your chick. I have lost two of mine to my dog. Now, the dogs get run of the yard in the morning and early afternoon, and the chickens get the yard the rest of the day until they go in to roost.

Mama Hen Chris: Thank your son for his service for us.

Pastrymama: One of my Ameraucanas is broody. My new coop isn't done yet so I think I'll stick her in a large dog crate and put the other eggs under her...unless you REALLY want them! I only have two that aren't under the Wyandotte broody. She is sitting on three and ate the others.

On another note, I had no idea how noisy broody hens can be when they are off their nest. Wow, both of them just raise a racket. And poop, my gosh, they don't poop on their nest, but hold it until they get out to the yard. I never knew a chicken could poo so much. On that note, I hope everyone's day is going great. I'm off to enjoy the sunshine before it gets too darn hot.
