Arizona Chickens

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this

One of my son's babysitters almost died one morning. She didn't know she had MS, and had her first attack and it was so bad that she almost died. She was in the ICU for months, and then had to go to rehab for months. She was only 23 when that happened. She has not had any more flare ups thank goodness. If her mom had not insisted that she call 911 while her mom drove over there, she would have died before anyone could get there.
Then my husband's cousin broke his leg and went in for surgery to get it fixed. The anesthesia killed him because he didn't know he had malignant hyperthermia. My husband's family all got tested and my father in law, my husband, all of the siblings and cousins are all positive for it. I'm sure my son is too. He can't be tested until he is 12 though. They take out a chunk of your thigh muscle to test how it reacts to the anesthesia.
You just never know when something will happen.
sometimes i think when we are having a bad day or feeling sorry for ourselves for one reason or another, something comes up to slap us back into a quick reality check and be ever so greatful of all the things in our lives that we do have. i got one today around 11:15.

my fireman's first cousin's wife was out walking their 18month old(only child) this morning down in awatukee. she collapsed and died right there on the sidewalk. we don't know the reason yet, her husband was out of town, her family lives in the midwest, his family in CA. all i know is that i will hug my family tighter tonight, but two other families will never be the same.

his cousin's wife passed, not the child.

WELCOME to all the new PEEPS!!! Havent had time to check up on all the new posts til today.

Welcome to all the New Peeps.
Puffy, Thanks, You saw how beautiful Hawkeye was. I am thinking seriously of getting two or three turkeys chicks from you. Not this week but next week your baby goat should be ready to go home with you.

OK a good idea I fell into.

Sick of putting the adolescents into the pen - we finally got them all in the same coop / run for the evening.

How to keep the big girls from picking on / scalping the little ones?

I put a piece of railing I built for our now defunct balcony in (diagonally - 'cause that's the only way it'd fit) across the coop. It has the perfect spacing to let the smaller ones through and keep the big ones out.

Just FYI it is 1/2" sq steel pickets on 4' centers.

Ugly but...

Works like a charm!

Yeah the big girls could jump it if they really wanted to but all the food / water / door / nest boxes / light / interesting stuff is on their side anyway.

All the littles went into the coop by themselves tonight - didn't have to gather a one of 'em!

Management issues just got a little easier to manage!

Hi Everyone!

Just checking in here...I'm new at growing chickens. I live up north in Chino Valley (north of Prescott). My husband and I have 6 chicks about 4 weeks old now. Three Ameracaunas and three Dominiques. Just finishing up their nesting coop and more importantly their run :) Our peeps are ready for their run. They will continue to sleep inside their kiddie pool palace at night... it is in the garage at night until the nesting coop is finished.

Anyway...I just wanted to say hi! It is a great site to learn from-thanks to all of you.

So my 2 year old MFD I'm 90% sure has scaley mites on her feet.

I'm pretty sure she's had them for a while and I just didn't understand what I was seeing.

We're 4 days into an oil-footbath technique (nightly dips) and I am feeling pretty sorry for her as she is so greasy now.

She's got feathered feet and no matter how much we wipe off her feet the oil just ends up all over her, clumping her feathers, etc....she's always been very fastidious and when I watch her walk around I can just tell that she feels gross!

Has anyone tried this technique or something similar and had success? I figure we'll keep at it for 5 more nights and then give her a bath and see how her legs are.....

Hey everyone!!

This is a pretty friendly group of Chicken Lovers. I think you will like it here!!

Billiam- Being an RN for more years than I care to admit, has made me a bit of an expert on unpleasant odors. Take my advice and hang the traps away from your porches and doors. They work great but after ripening a couple of days the smell will gag a maggot.

Fuzzybird- I have lost track of time. How are your eggs doing?? Has it been 3 weeks yet?? Any babies??

for anyone up here in north phoenix, i went to anderson's the other day(the feed store by turf paradise on tierra buena off 19th ave) and their bags of 12ft pine shavings are only $6.75!!!!!! i bought 4 since that's all that would fit in the suburban with all the kids in it. i will go back today for another 4 or so.

i am also doing a MAJOR flock reduction. i have soooo many eggs, and simply can't use them all and can't seem to sell as many as i used to and i don't want to spend all that time cleaning anymore. my purebreds are going to live with Memphis, i have already sold off my EEs, redstars, salmon faverolle, plus several silkie chicks. i am keeping some select silkies, all the basque and the ducks, plus my favorite dark brahmas, not sure if i could get rid of them.

life has been far to complicated and overwhelming, so it's time to clean house.
do you have any silkies left for sale :)
